I wonder if this joke might have come from the south of England, where the "hw" pronunciation of the digraph "wh" has largely disappeared, so that "which witch did whine about the wine" sounds the same as "wich wich did wine about the wine."

Yes, Bill, it's actually a wolf joke.
The thing about modern southern English pronunciation (particularly "Estuary English") that really gives me trouble with comprehension is the replacement of certain consonants with glottal stops, which requires changes in pronunciation of vowels to maintain comprehension among those who so corrupt the language. Arhoticity doesn't cause me much difficulty because I am acquainted with southern US accents, wheah the ahs just disappeah and ahn't theah enny moah.

I figure that the Israeli claim to Palestine after an absence of.... how long; maybe one or two millenia... is much weaker than indigenous Americans' claim to all of the Americas after one or two centuries (somewhat more or less in places).
