Anonymous10/07/2023 12:44:00 PM I wonder if this joke might have come from the south of England, where the "hw" pronunciation of the digraph "wh" has largely disappeared, so that "which witch did whine about the wine" sounds the same as "wich wich did wine about the wine." ----Alan
Glad it gave you a chuckle, Susan. You're quite welcome, Listener. Interesting, Alan. Myself, I didn't analyze it, just stared blankly for a moment and then started laughing. Yes, Bill, it's actually a wolf joke.
The thing about modern southern English pronunciation (particularly "Estuary English") that really gives me trouble with comprehension is the replacement of certain consonants with glottal stops, which requires changes in pronunciation of vowels to maintain comprehension among those who so corrupt the language. Arhoticity doesn't cause me much difficulty because I am acquainted with southern US accents, wheah the ahs just disappeah and ahn't theah enny moah. ---Alan
I lurved it, but I'm the kid of a man who totally adored puns and I adored him. I had *NO* chance. . . . No such thing as a bad or far-fetched pun. . . .

Remind me why Santos hasn't been expelled from the House? Lying, fraud, sexual misconduct with a young male staffer... Oh, wait, I forgot. These are the types of things you have to do to prove you're worthy to get into the MAGA club. And since the MAGA club seems to be running the House now,it's all tiggaty boo.
I figure that the Israeli claim to Palestine after an absence of.... how long; maybe one or two millenia... is much weaker than indigenous Americans' claim to all of the Americas after one or two centuries (somewhat more or less in places). ----Alan
President Biden has affirmed the United States' support of Israel. I wonder where that will lead. I guess nowhere this week, with the House incapacitated.

We knew the retaliation would come - Gaza resident Ece Göksedef, Live reporter
Hassan Jber, a 60-year-old journalist who lives in Gaza with his family, says that residents of the city woke up to the sounds of bombing and shooting this morning, before learning that Palestinian gunmen had attacked Israeli villages.
He said Hamas had been under pressure from people in Gaza to mount an attack against Israel over "settler attacks on Palestinians".
"They broke the silence today," he said.
He says that he doesn’t support any kind of violence but he knows that neither Hamas nor Israel “will stop their attacks”.

New Numbers: At least 300 people in Israel were killed in the unprecedented attack, an Israeli official told CNN Saturday night, and Israeli media reported that at least 1,500 people have been wounded.
At least 232 Palestinians were killed in Gaza on Saturday, with 1,697 injured, the Palestinian health ministry in Gaza said in a statement.
Ah, c'est terrible.
