The Burlington (Vermont) International Airport hit 86 F on Wednesday, breaking a long standing record high temperature of 82ºF set back in 1891. This is also now the new all-time October record high temperature.

She was a young woman during the last war between the new Japanese government and feudal forces. There was a huge battle upstream of the castle town where she lived, and she saw the river running red with blood. I saw the bullet holes in the walls of a big temple that served as a fortress in that war because of its strategic position and its physical strength. And now I think of the yearly “iron harvest” along the Western Front of The Great War.
Here's hoping the judge will simply Stop Trump altogether.

I actually worry more about the long term effects of stopping aid to Ukraine than our government shutting down. At least with the latter we can vote the jerks out and right the ship. But if Ukraine falls to Putin, it would strengthen dictators all over the world, and Russia, China and North Korea would be formidable.
What a story from Miyoko's grandmother! to see your river running red with blood is a horror we don't want to see playing out in Ukraine and, well, anywhere. That we are still witnessing the horrors of war in our day and time is unconscionable. A wise priest I knew once asked her congregation if we thought humans are evolving, getting better over time. Some thought we surely must be. But thinking it over, her point that it is reasonable to conclude that we can't ever do it ourselves, that we actually do need a saviour, seems to be slowly gaining validity.
I remember a teacher at my high school who maintained that humans are not intelligent beings, only semi-intelligent. Small wonder that extraterrestrials would not want to socialize with us. ----Alan
