Mark Rountree wrote this on The Unofficial Heather Cox Richardson Discussion page on Facebook:

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office said Friday that he had 'no plans' to meet with President Joe Biden when the president traveled to Florida on Saturday to survey damage from Hurricane Idalia. Here is what a DeSantis spokesman said:

“In these rural communities, and so soon after impact, the security preparations alone that would go into setting up such a meeting would shut down ongoing recovery efforts.”

Translation: The Governor is fighting for his life as a candidate for President and doesn’t want to risk any photos of him shaking hands with Biden, who has been an effective rescuer of Floridians. But DeSantis wants Biden to send federal money just the same.

And here is what President Biden’s representative replied:

“President Biden and the first lady look forward to meeting members of the community impacted by Hurricane Idalia and surveying impacts of the storm. Their visit to Florida has been planned in close coordination with the Federal Emergency Management Agency as well as state and local leaders to ensure there is no impact on response operations.”

Translation: President Biden sees DeSantis for the craven politician that he is and won’t let it stand in the way of expressing support for Florida citizens, regardless of who they vote for.

    1. I was rather dubious about Biden given what I remember of his actions as a senator, and remain apprehensive about his choice of VP; but IMO he has done a surprisingly good job as President, and I intend to vote for him in the next election, even though my vote will have no effect whatsoever.

    2. Agreed that I didn't like his choice for veep. Still, in my view he's the first genuine Democrat we've had for decades. He has been doing a good job, especially considering the - pardon my
French - assholes he has to deal with in Congress. Though I voted for Howie Hawkins last time (BTW he was a much more solid candidate than Jill Stein), I plan to vote for the Pres. in 2024.

    3. Oh, yeah--it was Howie Hawkins I voter for in 2020. Birds of a feather flock together, eh?

    6. I voted for Biden. You can't take things for granted in Illinois. Within the past two decades we have had a Republican Senator and a Republican governor. For one term each, but still.
I wan't impressed by Biden in the primary but have liked what he has done in office, The Infrastructure and Jobs Ace and the Inflation Reduction Act are both major accomplishments.

    7. I voted for Biden, but I hesitated, because I'd read his book and he seemed to me to be too indecisive. But somehow he has been steady and resolved as President and I join you all in being very pleased with what he has accomplished (under incredible duress) as well as his character while doing it. He is a true statesman...and we sure need more of those. I would prefer someone younger, just for the sake of longevity in office...and not ending up with Harris if the worst happens. Yet at this time we really need someone who knows the fine details of how government actually works.

  2. Listener, I must have missed something. What's so special about this circus? Do you have grandchildren among the performers?

    1. From Wikipedia:
"Circus Smirkus is a non-profit, award-winning, international youth circus founded in 1987 by Rob Mermin. Based in Greensboro, Vermont, the mission of Circus Smirkus is to promote the skills, culture and traditions of the traveling circus and to inspire youth to engage in the circus arts."

      What Alan said!
It’s Vermont based and they have circus camps for kids ages 5-18! It’s usually the teens who perform, though. Kids come from all over the country and they perform all over New England. Very impressive.

America’s Surprising Partisan Divide on Life Expectancy [Click] “Centuries-old settlement patterns — and the attitudes they spawned about government — are to blame for differences in longevity between red southern states and bluer parts of the country.” I rather suspect over-extrapolation, but this is nevertheless interesting. I note that in the southwest they overlook well known genetic differences among sub populations, and they talk about the “Left Coast” (which is largely mountainous) as a coastal plain. I remember reading about their similar analysis of gun deaths.

Not only did Meadows get caught perjuring himself, his attorney was caught suborning (requesting/encouraging) perjury! At least in theory that could be the end of his career. [Full disclosure: I have on rare occasions been led into inaccurate statements by opposing counsel during cross-examination; even if one realizes it shortly thereafter, one must wait until the other attorney asks a question on re-direct that provides an opportunity to make a correction.]

  6. A little while ago I watched the latest Space X (multiple satellite) launch, and am not watching the return of the International Space Station crew members--should be landing in about 15 minute. I have a vivid recollection of watching the launch of Freedom 7 live on TV back in 1961; I don't recall if they broadcast the splashdown live. I am still a sucker for such videos.
