  2. WaPo: Three judge panel of 5th Circuit finds that contacts with tech companies by officials from the White House, the surgeon general’s office, the CDC and the FBI likely amounted to coercion [Click] “The decision was likely to be seen as victory for conservatives who’ve long argued that social media platforms’ content moderation efforts restrict their free speech rights. But some advocates also said the ruling was an improvement over a temporary injunction U.S. District Judge Terry A. Doughty issued July 4th. David Greene, an attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, said the new injunction was ‘a thousand times better’ than what Doughty, an appointee of former president Trump, had ordered originally.”

    1. You're welcome. It's a familiar lament - the cavemen probably made it - Kids today!

    1. He's used to hawking(sp?) a pillow. The rough and tumble of a deposition was totally alien. Poor guy probably needed his pillow.

Seriously, I doubt I could undergo the ordeal of a deposition and come out unshaken. So, I really do think we should all be slow to mock.

    2. I've been deposed about fifty times; they are not particularly challenging if one unhesitatingly tells the truth. If one should be trying to lie, they are intended to discover it.

P.S.: You spelled "hawk" correctly, Cat.:

      Hawk \Hawk\, v. t. [Akin to D. hauker a hawker, G. h["o]ken,
      h["o]cken, to higgle, to retail, h["o]ke, h["o]ker, a
      higgler, huckster. See Huckster.]
To offer for sale by outcry in the street; to carry
      (merchandise) about from place to place for sale; to peddle;
as, to hawk goods or pamphlets.
      [1913 Webster]

    3. Put in a slightly different way, depositions are also to determine if the deponent actually knows what s/he is talking about. "I heard it on Faux Gnus" doesn't qualify.

    4. Not sure if I've ever been deposed. There was one instance where I was formally interviewed for the record by lawyers in a civil case, but I don't recall being under oath.

    5. Thanks, Alan. Wasn't sure of the spelling. I like higgle. Must try to remember that one.

  5. Well, here's an interesting conundrum...

I tried to post my above links from my iPhone, using the "{listener} designation, as usual. But I keep getting an error message that my post cannot be posted "please try again later." So I will keep trying it, that way, but if it doesn't work then I will be AWOL from tomorrow until Wednesday, as we are away in Maine. Unless I take my computer with me...which, under the circumstances, I might. Threads for each day are already set, at least.

    1. That has plagued me for some time, listener. Sometimes I get past it by just repeatedly reposting. Alternatively, closing my browser and reopening it seems to be more effective.

    2. The problem comes and goes; when I begin posting in the morning it doesn't happen--which prompted me to try turning my laptop off and then on again, later just closing the browser and reopening it.

  6. Ukraine War miscellaney [Click] One item: Ukraine has destroyed about 2/3 of Russia’s KA-52 Alligator attack helicopter fleet. Another item: Animated speech by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. My command of German is not what it was fifty-odd years ago, but between what I remember and the simultaneous translation, I could really enjoy it. I never thought Mr. Scholz could be so assertive.

  8. Cooter was here yesterday and today, and brought his dad, the father of all my children to celebrate his 97th birthday. Both of us recognizing this may be the last time we see each other. Oddly sweet couple of days.

  9. It is definitely not my imagination that massage plus liniment has relieved the tight muscles in my right leg, extending up to my lower back. Quickly, too-- in about seven to ten days. Just now I washed my dinner dishes, and decided to try it putting them into the bottom of the kitchen sink. No back pain; first time in I don't know how many years. I had been having to place them on the divider between the right and left sinks, one at a time. I am of half a mind to celebrate with a bit of Lord Dunsany--- but better read some more of the state drivers' handbook first, to prepare for the written driving test some time later this month. Nice weather today- nice breeze, not hot, clouds changing throughout the day.

      That’s fabulous news!
      What brand is it?

      Delete
    3. Walgreen's "Pain Reliving Cream", camphor 4%, menthol 10%, methyl salycylate 30%. Non-greasy. Same as the name-brand liniment [Ben-Gay Ultra Strength] but less expensive and second one half price to boot. One must be cautious to avoid getting in eyes or other sensitive places. [Hints: 1) don't use shortly after hot bath or shower; 2) do not apply to any part of legs before pulling on undershorts or pajama bottoms--only after.] I have been putting it on once or twice a day, above the afflicted knee (right) and on the lower back (right side). Massage where I discovered the tight muscle, some by me and some by my sweetie. The key was finding the afflicted muscle(s)-- discovered a particularly sore spot just above and a little to the right of the kneecap..

  10. Started reading my Dunsany selections. Gods of Pegana is interesting experimentation with word play, and must have been very new and surprising when it was published. The Book of Wonder shows a lot of progress, but I tired of it. The Sword of Welleran seems much more mature, but I am taking a break from it. Will have to look up the Two Jars of Mustard, I think.

    1. Ah, “The Two Bottles of RELISH,” lead story in the collection “The Little Tales of Smethers” (1952). Not available on gutenberg.org (probably still copyrighted), but available in audio format on YouTube.

    2. It is in the public domain, but the printed copies are rather expensive. So audio it is, and if that is appealing, then the library.
