Glad to hear your hand is doing better; tendonitis takes time to resolve. Mine was of much longer standing and I didn't seek medical care, but it has greatly improved since retirement. (I didn't seek medical care because I assumed it was carpal tunnel syndrome, and had seen a couple of people go through surgical care for that.) ---Alan
Well, folks, we bit the bullet and bought the boat. Well, we put down a hefty deposit and had a wonderful chat with the owner. Her husband died in December after an 11 year battle with cancer. They had pretty much lived on the boat in the Summers, and she's emotional to let it go. But she has osteoarthritis and just can't do it anymore...despite working at the marina.
Got home and read the most recent survey report (which we are having updated) and noted at least three things that need updating on the boat in the coming year. Took a deep breath and committed to doing it.
I can't begin to tell you how amazed I am at Wil! He never spends money lightly and I can see he *really* wants this boat. It's really adorable the way he isn't daunted by the cost or effort that will be needed. I think I've never seen him want something so much...which makes me okay with doing it. It's definitely the best used boat we've found, in the size and price range we were hunting for.
I should think an inboard engine would be more trouble than it was worth; a small outboard ought to get it in and out of harbor all right. I assume that Lake Champlain doesn't often have a swell or surf comparable to an ocean. ---Alan Hmmmm . . . I wonder if someone could make a bit of money with a mini-tugboat service . . .
In days of yore there were steamships on Lake Champlain, but no longer. However, there are boats that bring in some real money, as one can get a tour of Lake and the area aboard one of two beautiful Schooners! The Lake is over 400ft deep in places, and when the wind is high, we get some impressive waves. But, no, not like the ocean. However, it is said that sailors get a workout here, and have every opportunity to learn the ropes as the wind can shift and a storm can come over the mountains and one need to keep a weather eye. It certainly is a beautiful Lake, with mountains all around.
Lots of blue sky this morning, some thin clouds to the north and thicker but low clouds over the mountains, and just a slight breeze. No change in river level. Just the right number of tornadoes, lightning strikes, and earthquakes. ----Alan

The Wikipedia entry for the Hindenburg Disaster discusses the lacing holding the cover onto the frame. That on the Hindenburg, unlike the slightly earlier Graf Zeppelin II, did not have graphite in the dope, which was added to make it conductive. The Zeppelin Works engineers and managers kept quiet about that, but considered it a design defect that could have contributed to the disaster. ----Alan

Maybe make the tug a steamer and charge for rides as well? Another of my great commercial ideas that will go nowhere . . .
