(Susan) I am the rare person who is not in love with Spring. Spring means yard-work, which I hate. Bugs, which I also hate. Spring is also the preview of the fires of Summer, which I hate even more. I don't like any outdoor temperature over 72 degrees, I burn to a crisp quickly and all the people come outside and walk around, ugh. Summer is like a prolonged trailer for the Fires of Hell. I will eagerly await Fall, which is my most favorite season.
listener: It varies considerably from one place to another, but most people who are called to report for jury duty don't even get called for questioning ["voir dire"], much less get selected for a jury. Hereabouts if one is called, shows up, and isn't selected for a jury on that day, his or her obligation is satisfied for the year (or maybe several years--I don't remember. I have never managed to get on a jury. As a frequent witness, I observed that in capital cases things are generally so calm that one would think it was a jay-walking case--- nothing like a Perry Mason case on TV [dating myself]. I think the reason is that the judge and attorneys want to do everything humanly possible to avoid laying legitimate grounds for an appeal.
Thanks for the link, Alan. Lee sounds really good. I notice that she is currently 76. That means she will be 82 or 83 and the end of her first term -- about the age I started to lose my energy. This suggests she might be a one-term Senator -- although a number have held on much longer -- but I have no problem with that.
listener: to reinforce what Alan said, I have been called for jury duty three times. (Technically five, but the first time I got a hardship excuse because it would disrupt my graduate research and the last time I intended to request a postponement but instead requested a permanent excuse because I was over 70). Of the three times I reported in, I was called to the panel twice but was never actually on the jury. For the civil trial it was obvious they knew in advance which four of the 12 they had called they wanted on the jury. On the thrid occasion the case we had been called for was settled just before the trial was to begin.

DeleteIt is not unusual for the attorneys to quickly work things out when they hear a jury is on the way.

Not as out-there as I imagined (but far enough). Basically Methodist, but highly conservative Methodist.

IMHO, the molecular complexity of anything that can be called life would in itself make it rare.
