Warm here too. Will hit 43°F
… with 15” of snow expected Thursday.

    2. Likewise 43F in Oak Park, which is not particularly unusual for the date. Predicted highs for the rest of the week range from 23F to 47F

“Putin thought Ukraine was weak and the West was divided. He’s counting on us not sticking together. He was counting on the inability to keep Nato united. He was counting on us not to be able to bring in others to the side of Ukraine. He thought he could outlast us. I don’t think he’s thinking that right now.”
      — President Biden, quoted by the BBC.

  4. As for Chalk River, I remember my nuclear chemistry professor talking about it in passing; that would be about 1968. She and her husband (who had died of leukemia) both worked at Oak Ridge during WWII.

    1. Aside: the first assignment in her first nuclear chemistry/physics lab was for the students to build their own Geiger counters--they weren't commercially available at the time.

    2. She said the difficult part of making the geiger counters was splitting the mica to make the radiation window for the probe.

  5. Back from a weekend beer trou of Wisconsin. A friend and I went to the home of another friend in Madison, then the next day we joined two others in Milwaukee. Over the weekend we visited five pubs in Wisconsin, sampling most of the veers on offer, followed by a communal beer share in Waukegan (Illinois). I arrived home with four-packs of two different bourbon-barrel-aged imperial stouts and a six-pack of a specially good Scotch ale.

  6. My restored and supplemented exercise regimen has already had noticeable positive results on my pulmonary function. The previous time I went for a walk I could barely manage 1km; today I managed 2 (albeit with a little difficulty after 1.5). I have been getting some gardening done, albeit slowly; between yesterday and the day before, I pruned a good-sized persimmon tree. Today I had better spray sulphur on the peaches and plums, which are beginning to bloom.
