Vermont, in solidarity with Buffalo...

  1. Thanks for the warning about the cows, listener--we were careful to avoid them! [grin] The predicted low temperature last night was 36F; currently [5:30 AM] 35F, but I hear the wind machines in the citrus orchards across the river running. It still surprises me that it makes economic sense to plant the orchards on the valley floor and install all those wind machines to protect them; the citrus orchards used to all be planted a little higher up so the cold air would naturally drain away.

    1. Time for a cup of coffee, and to check on the news about the snow in western New York; it was certainly impressive last night. The same sort of thing regularly happens along the west coast of Japan-- the very cold but dry wind out of Siberia picks up moisture from the Sea of Japan and then dumps the resultant snow as it rises over the mountains of Japan. In the north houses famously have a winter door on the second story. Lots of home karaoke machines there, too.

    2. 😁

Gosh, what sort of snow do they get in Japan onto which one can walk out a second floor door? On snowshoes, perhaps? I imagine it would be easy to fall down deep into the snow.

    3. I must be very wet, heavy snow. The old houses in the snowiest regions have very steeply pitched roofs. The roads that are plowed look like ones in the high Sierras of California--- with sheer vertical walls of snow higher than any truck.

  2. I have just seen an email from Adam Frisch that states there WILL be a recount, as required by Colorado law, but Frisch (and I) do not expect this to change anything. As I suspected, Richardson's claim that Frisch's concession meant there would be no recount reflected cluelessness about how things go in that state.

    1. Who pays for the automatic recall? I assume it's the voters. And when it's not automatic but it's close, and a candidate may ask for a recount, I think it's the candidate and supporters who pay for the recount. I had the impression that Frisch was attempting to ensure that he and his supporters need not pay for a recount. I think he was even wishing that the voters wouldn't have to pay for an automatic recall, since he does not believe the end result would change.

    2. Yes, the state pays for the recount. I don't know what Colorado law says about situations where the race isn't close enough to trigger an automatic recount, but it's been obvious from the closing hours that this race was going to an automatic recount. That's a matter of law.

  3. A coupld of hours ago I got a robocall from a group wanting me to sign a petition urging DeSantis to run. So now the question is what Pence will do.
