For all the Rosies and all who work hard...

  1. Oops! Late posting of today's new thread was a surprise to me, as I had posted new pages through September 19th. However, I managed to miss Labor Day, as I imagine I was seeking an appropriate photo, then forgot. Honest, it wasn't intended as a "no work on Labor Day" statement! LOL.

Our predicted high temperature today 110F. Gotta say that IS hot for us--maybe not for Phoenix, but for us.

U.S. Ambassador to Russia Suddenly Retires [Click] Hmmmm . . . I’m sure it is simply a coincidence that it happened so soon after Russia claimed they had to turn off the Nordstream gas pipeline to Germany because of an oil leak that the pipeline experts said wouldn’t be a significant problem.

    1. Today is a "please save electricity 4-9PM" day, and very unusually tomorrow will be too. I read that the big metropolitan areas of California are being cooked.

    1. One of the basic principles of business is that management needs labor and labor needs management. One thing the drivers could really use is heating in the winter and air conditioning in the summer.

    2. I imagine that heating, air conditioning, and transition to electric propulsion of the UPS delivery vans could be rolled into one agreement--a win for everyone. I think I remember a report of an English electric delivery van manufacturer that uses standardised distributed factories requiring no more than a regular warehouse signing a contract with UPS.

  5. These states will have abortion on the ballot in November

California, Kentucky, Montana, Michigan and Vermont

"Vermont voters will consider whether to approve a state constitutional amendment that abortion rights supporters say would protect “every person’s right to make their own reproductive decisions,” including about pregnancies, abortion and birth control.

"If the proposal is adopted, the Vermont Constitution would be amended to read: “That an individual’s right to personal reproductive autonomy is central to the liberty and dignity to determine one’s own life course and shall not be denied or infringed unless justified by a compelling State interest achieved by the least restrictive means.”

"A “yes” vote would amend the state constitution, while a “no” vote would keep the status quo in Vermont, where abortion is legal at all stages of pregnancy.

"The proposed amendment was first brought by the Vermont Legislature in 2019."

Just one more reason that I love Vermont.

  6. WSJ: British Pound Falls to Lowest Level Since 1985 as U.K. Economic Pain Mounts [Click] Tremendously informative graph of dollar vs. pound exchange rates since US independence. It reflects the incredible stability of UK prices throughout Victoria’s reign, US inflation during and deflation following the Civil War, the miscalculated return to the gold standard in the UK following WWI, etc., etc.

    1. Doesn't seem inconsistent with what I have recently observed in Fresno, which is economically and politically somewhat backward for California.

    3. I'll give you an idea how politically backward Fresno is: Back when Trump and HRC ran for President, I seem to have been the only person in my precinct to vote for Gloria La Riva for President! [Chortle]

    1. I am sure I have heard of other examples, but the one that immediately comes to mind is the Chinese Nationalists’ breaking of the Yellow River dikes in an attempt to halt Japanese Army advances. [Click] That helped to turn the people against the Nationalists.

—President Biden, in response to a heckler [Click] at a Labor Day speech. This just begs to be put into a video (split screen?) with The Former Guy responding to a heckler (or just a sign carrier).

I dunno; I may have to consider voting for Biden if he keeps up this sort of thing. . .

  10. Been watching a whole lot of DVDs recently. Enough to increasingly wonder how Viking River Cruises can mispronounce the name of the same city (BeiJing) for 15 years and no one ever corrects them and they never notice. . . . It is not a difficult word. Uses the the same JING as Jingle bells. . . .

    1. Same way as as they can/could mispronounce it when it was written Peking (an older method of romanization, still pronounced Bay-jing).
