Dog on a Mission

  1. I woke up this morning cogitating about replacements for Blogger that would serve our purposes and be practical for puddle and Cat. I thought that a step or two backwards in technology might be in order, and started rooting around for information. Here is where my wanderings led me:

Bulletin board systems [Click] don’t look like a viable system for us.

Chat Rooms [Click] “The primary use of a chat room is to share information via text with a group of other users. Generally speaking, the ability to converse with multiple people in the same conversation differentiates chat rooms from instant messaging programs, which are more typically designed for one-to-one communication.”

    Internet Relay Chat [Click]

IRC Software [Click] “A number of web browsers have built-in IRC clients, such as Opera (version 12.18 and earlier)[85] and the ChatZilla add-on for Mozilla Firefox (for Firefox 56 and earlier; included as a built-in component of SeaMonkey).”

I don't know if this is helpful; it is a bit deep for me, but I presume others here might have adequate knowledge or helpful contacts.

    2. I don't know much about it. My brother told me about it a while back when we were talking about finding a messaging service the family could use--without using Facebook.

When I try looking for anything to do with messaging and landlines, I find stuff about how to send text messages with your house phone. Is it really a question of having a landline per se, or an issue of "slow internet" or "bad connection"? Is puddle using a smartphone at all, or just a desktop computer? Either way, I'm guessing something that doesn't require downloading an app would be preferable.

    3. There is NO cell phone coverage where puddle lives, so she uses computer only and slow dialup modem.

  3. The invisible universe, from supernova to black holes – with Matthew Bothwell [Click] Royal Society lecture; very good presentation, leading up to what we can expect from the James Webb Space Telescope, and why.

  4. I got some weeding done this afternoon; there were a few mosquitos about. No breeze today, so it was a little warmer. No clouds.

    1. We'll have mosquitoes in the coming week, I think, as we're expecting 60's, then 70's and 82 by Wednesday. (That's WAY too early for 80ºF up here!!!)

  5. WaPo (I can't yet find elsewhere): Republicans could rue the Supreme Court ending abortion rights [Click] “History shows that when abortion rights have seemed most at risk, voters revolt — even in conservative states.” Example: Idaho 1990.
