  1. What if Mother Nature prompted Justice Thomas to resign and Joe Biden decided to correct history by nominating Anita Hill? Could the nation survive a five to four female majority on the Court?

    1. Interesting idea; she is 65 years old, not at all old for a nominee to the Supreme Court. I note that in addition to her other qualifications, she is distinguished in commercial law.

    1. Ghost guns don't seem to be a significant problem in Chicago. It's most guns illegally imported from Indiana or sometimes Tennessee.

    2. They seem to be an increasing problem here, but the simple abundance of guns seems to be the basic problem. I don't have high hopes for change, but our current Sheriff is retiring later this year, and she has long been handing out concealed weapons permits like Halowe'en candy, no justification required.

  3. U.S. doubts new Russian war chief can end Moscow’s floundering [Click] Previous speculation seems to be confirmed: there was no general in overall command of the invasion of Ukraine. The new guy would be an excellent target for assassination, like other Russian generals and colonels. I expect that the Ukrainians and their foreign friends must be doing their best to track him.

    1. Whoo hoo! What is your drought level looking like?

VPR: Vermont saw below average snowpack this winter, according to data from the National Weather Service. Most parts of the state saw between 75% to 90% of normal snowfall, with parts of northern Vermont faring better. Scott Whittier with NWS says this season's snowpack isn't enough to push Vermont out of the multiyear drought it's been in.

We, in the north, just might maybe get out of drought mode if we keep having a rainy Spring. (We will also have a lot more ticks.)

    2. April snowstorm smacks Tahoe: 'It's absolutely dumping snow out there!' [Click]

“The mid-April snow won't put a dent in the California drought, but it's notable after extremely dry conditions in January, February and March.”

"California statewide snow water equivalent is now down to an absolutely abysmal 22% of average," Swain wrote on Twitter. "However, a more favorable weather pattern (colder w/a couple of episodes of mountain snow) will stem loss temporarily & may even add a percentage point or three."

    3. Millerton Lake Water Level [Click] This is the big reservoir upstream of us. Good graphs and map of California drought levels. There is enough water in the river here; as I recall, several years ago a deal was struck among the interested parties to keep enough water in the river to restore the ecology, and keep water in the river all the way to the delta if at all possible.

  5. Here are a couple from Peter Zeihan (not that I agree completely with him, but I think he is well worth listening to):
