Mourning Dove in the Lilac

  1. No snow here, but for a change we continue to have the winter weather that used to be usual--foggy to overcast, cool but above freezing. We are making decent progress with pruning our fruit trees, most of which grew by two meters since last year; one of the persimmons looks to have grown by three meters. Obviously we can't pick fruit that high. This year we will prune them harder than we usually do.

Two days ago: Crews begin long process of dismantling Lee statue pedestal [Click]
More here: [Click] The Lee statue, which was dismantled in September, was the last remaining Confederate figure to remain on the city's historic Monument Avenue, after having become the subject of intense controversy following the death of George Floyd in May 2020.

Shortly after Floyd's death in police custody, Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney ordered nearby likenesses of Confederate Gens. JEB Stuart and Stonewall Jackson removed, as well Confederate Naval commander Matthew Fontaine Murray. Protesters had earlier toppled a statue of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

I wonder what will become of the pedestal. I should have it reduced to gravel and used for paving somewhere.

  4. Whoa, our lights blacked out for a long moment, then came back up. Then I read online that a car had a rollover into guard rails and power lines are down, less than a mile from here. Scary sort of accident. Fortunately the driver (only occupant) is okay. There are also several other accidents in the area. Must be slipsy tonight.
Whoops! Power is OUT now. The crews must be fixing the lines. Shouldn’t be too long.
