  1. A new Covid-19 variant could show immune evasion and enhanced transmissibility, South African scientists warn https://www.cnn.com/2021/11/25/world/covid-variant-south-africa-immune-evasion-transmissibility/index.html

  2. My father's mother took him and fled her husband, evidently for no good reason--by all accounts and evidence he was a good man. Her identical twin sister got a divorce without her husband's knowledge or consent by filing a claim when he couldn't be aware of or respond to it because he was out of state, working hard for his family. Evidently at the time no-fault divorces were not allowed; there had to be allegations of abuse--failure to support, wife beating, drunkenness, gambling etc. (the more the better), and those are the sorts of things she alleged. The allegations seem to have been complete fictions given what I could find about the man, including his subsequent marriage and accounts by one or two people who knew him. The other day Ancestry.com reported a possible 3rd or 4th cousin based on DNA, and I contacted her. She was a relative of the second sister, who divorced her husband. She knew of a third sister who got a divorce on much the same grounds.

    1. Yes, no-fault divorce is relatively new (i.e., within my lifetime). Consensual divorce often involved a staged "adultery" with a PI poised to take a photo.

  3. There is something strange about the U.S. legal system in that there is great emphasis on documentation, but when matters get into court, the emphasis is on testimony. I think it is derived from the mistaken belief that people can tell from a person's demeanor whether s/he's speaking truth or lying. Also, consistency is supposed to be related to truth. Research studies have shown that a fictional narration is more likely to be repeated verbatim than a truthful recollection because the brain apparently stores different aspects of the same memory in different places.
For some reason, there are no negative consequences for lies; certainly not for those pronounced by lawyers on behalf of clients. Which accounts for the more than 150 people sentenced to death because of falsification on the prosecution side.
Until this year there was no provision in Missouri law for anyone to correct for prosecutorial misconduct.
When the position is an elected office, the electorate has no way to evaluate performance, especially when most matters are settled with plea bargains to "save money and time."
Rittenhouse was overcharged, probably to elicit a plea and his defense team balked.

  4. Lara Trump, the Fox News contributor and wife of Eric Trump, has bizarrely claimed that the rising cost of the Thanksgiving turkey is part of a liberal plot to “chip away” at American traditions.

During a discussion on Fox News about inflation and its impact on Thanksgiving-related purchases, the former president’s daughter-in law claimed leftwing Americans “want to fundamentally transform America” and were using the humble Thanksgiving turkey as a vehicle for their nefarious plot.

“Well, how do you that? You have to change America from the inside-out. You have to take away our traditions. So it might seem a little funny and a little ridiculous. ‘Oh, don’t have a turkey, then people won’t come over.’”Advertisement

In the exchange with the Fox host Pete Hegseth, Trump was responding to comments made by the White House press secretary, Jen Psaki, that inflation had pushed costs of the traditional Thanksgiving bird to about a dollar more for a 20lb bird.

“It all goes to fundamentally transforming this country, and the way you do that is you make sure that we have no commonality whatsoever, no traditions as Americans whatsoever,” she said. “You start chipping away at that, and they don’t care that Thanksgiving costs a lot more.”

A battle over turkey inflation has been brewing for weeks, with conservatives accusing liberals of attempting to quash holidays, including Halloween, as part of an effort “to divide Americans up”.

“They don’t want us to have any common ground. They don’t want us to have any shared traditions like Thanksgiving. A lot of places last month actually did away with Halloween because they wanted to be inclusive of the people that didn’t celebrate Halloween,” Trump added.

The Communist Democrats just ruin everything. don’t they?

    1. Well, that IS a bit of a step up from pedophile cannibal cabals. . .

    2. Well, to be honest, there are other American "traditions" this "liberal" would rather see upended. You know, like hatred of people who are different and white people shooting black people.

  5. Did you all read Heather Cox Richardson's post day before yesterday about how Thanksgiving Day actually got started in the US during the Civil War? It began with some good news:

“The Biden administration has announced it will convene the first of two virtual “Summits for Democracy” on December 9 and 10, 2021. The gatherings will bring together leaders from 110 countries who work in government, civil society, and the private sector, to come up with an agenda to renew democratic government and work together to keep the ideals of democracy strong.
“Authoritarianism is growing around the world, including in America, and the administration is hoping to create practical ideas and strong alliances to defend against authoritarianism, fight corruption, and promote human rights, all values central to democracy.
That this announcement comes at Thanksgiving is fitting, since Thanksgiving is rooted in a defense of democracy during the Civil War.”

    1. Didn't read that, but Thanksgiving had been a significant celebration in much of New England prior to that. That's where most of our traditions come form. But it dfidn't become a truly national holiday until the Civil War.

  6. Penny got her MRI today. It'll be a while before we really know the results and what they mean.

I also got my Moderna booster. Penny said she didn't waht a booster and she leaves the house to seldom these days it's probably not that important.

I also went out to dinner, mostly so Marc would only have to fix dinner for himself and Penny. I was tired of going to the Greek restaurant that offers Hilton Honors points, so I went to the Mediterranean restaurant down the block. Very good pork tenderloin with a fruit sauce, but more expensive than I remembered. And their glasses of wine were small enough I needed three.

    1. Hoping for good news for Penny.

Good for you getting the booster! The more you protect yourself the more you protect Penny.
