  1. Sorry I was too late for the last thread. In something just a little bit related to Hannah's and Susan's comments, yesterday was Youngest's 39th birthday. He was born at home weighing 10lbs, 1oz. He was born at home because we greatly preferred natural to crazy style birthing.

So, in honour of his birthday, we drove up to Fletcher, Vermont to see the house in which he was born. We've been by before, but never on his birthday. Had it not been for Covid, I'd have stopped and told the current owners that a baby was once born in their house. I know we'd love that sort of history info about our house, and ~ best of all ~ they had a Black Lives Matter sign on the porch and a "We believe..." sign by their garage. Kindred spirits and definitely not DT supporters! Hurrah!! Anyway, the place looks better than ever!

    1. Houses have spirits that attract certain kinds of people. We bought a house in florida whose residents had always resisted the replacing of the single family houses with apartment blocks. We eventually sold the house after fending off more high rise buildings and the house still stands as constructed.

    2. Neat. My grandfather was a Social Democrat. Got sent off to the hinterland because he would not join the Nazi party. As a postal worker serving the farm communities, he had access to food supplies which sustained us after the war.

    3. That was supposed to go after Alan's post. LOL

    4. My step-grandfather was a registered member of the Socialist Party, but in the US; the consequences were not comparable.

    1. The German Social Democratic Party [Click] is my kinda people. Their re-orientation from Marxism in 1959 [Click] to a pre-Marxian type of socialism (aimed at ameliorating the anti-social tendencies of unregulated capitalism) turned them into a big tent center-left party. Their dedicated Marxists generally left for The Left Party [Click]

    2. Two minor notes: Rather recently (less than a year ago, I think) the SPD appeared on the verge of political extinction.

And in this campaign they had WAY better advertising posters than anyone else: generally speaking, a photo (often of their leader), a short and readily understood statement of a plan or plans [campaign promise(s)] and a red background. It grabbed attention, focused it, and could be understood at a glance.

    3. One could recognize an SPD campaign poster from a block away (or farther for a big one), and comprehend its message without slowing down while passing by. The CDU/CSU posters had no consistent color scheme, and one would have to stop and read them to grasp their messages--they were too wordy and not immediately recognizable.

  5. UPDATE FROM PUDDLE:

I found VoiceMail from puddle on my phone this morning, that was left there just 7 minutes before my alarm went off! So sorry to have missed her. She said not to call, though, as her sleep schedule is opposite mine at present. She just wanted us to know that she's okay, and not to call Sheriff Chuck...because she's waiting for a part for her computer and may not have it until after Indigenous Peoples Day.

So! Leave your greetings and messages for puddle here and I'll print them out and SnailMail them to her!

  6. Puddly, along with Phil Specht are both on FB and recently reconnected with me, as Sidney Lanier, which stands for the Sifney Lanier Environmental Advocacy Team (SLEAT) because when I got a FB account, I was too stupid to know that organizations are in a differnt category. My interest was just in keeping in touch with NH folk from the Dean and Shea-Porter campaigns who had all migrated to FB from Democracy for America and Dailykos. From the latter I have been banned, Lord only knows what for.

  8. Tomorrow Miyoko, I and an older friend will go to the public health department in the next county (Madera) to get our Covid booster shots. I scouted the location this afternoon since my art class was nearby, and saw that if there is a long line, it will probably be along the south wall of the building, with no shade. I just now checked the weather prediction (I quote): Tomorrow Tue 09/28 Partly cloudy skies. High 77F. Winds NW at 10 to 20 mph. YIKES! And this evening we could see the mountains! The reason to go to the next county is that (1) they are far better organized than Fresno County (granted it is a considerably smaller county, but still. . .) and (2) it about as close as downtown Fresno. For some reason the state online reservation service wouldn't work for me yesterday (maybe it didn't know about booster shots yet), but the Madera County Public Health clinic is walk-in, no reservation necessary. But we do not anticipate going to public gatherings or discontinuing use of our face masks any time soon. Flu shots next month, I suppose.

  9. Our next door neighbour, one house over, is a nurse. Earlier this year he organised the local Nurses Union.
I just learned that his brother, a father of four, has died of Covid (in Oregon). The memorial service was yesterday. So very sad. The first of the 10 siblings to die, too.
