  3. Wil and I had a Covid test today. No issues, symptoms or concerns; it's purely precautionary, as we are traveling this weekend to visit Youngest*Grand for her 2nd birthday. We just want to ensure that we are not asymptomatically bringing her the virus unawares.

It was my first test and Wil's second ~ he having had one back in December when he was in the hospital for the angioplasty and stents. We expect that these also will be negative. Results coming Thursday.

One nice thing is that in Vermont there are separate testing venues for folks who are asymptomatic and those with symptoms. And I have to say I am so glad that I didn't need a test until now, when the DIY method of test is so much gentler than the roto-rooter version Wil had in December!

    1. I understand that nowadays they use a kinder and gentler roto-rooter. That would be nice.

  4. Local Covid updates for our area:

More than 415 people in Fresno County were hospitalized with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 this week – a figure that’s about 27% higher than it was a week earlier, and more than five times the number of patients just a month ago.
The figures represent inpatient coronavirus cases at hospitals throughout Fresno County as of Monday, according to the California Department of Public Health. They include 398 patients for whom a COVID-19 diagnosis has been confirmed through laboratory testing, as well as 18 additional patients whose symptoms are consistent with the respiratory disease but for whom test results are pending.
Also included in the totals are 75 patients who are sick enough to require treatment in intensive-care units in the county’s hospitals.
A week earlier, Fresno County hospitals were caring for 314 confirmed patients and 14 suspected coronavirus patients. A month ago, on July 23, there were 57 confirmed patients and 10 patients with suspected cases of COVID-19, including 12 in ICU beds.
Patient loads have also risen dramatically across the broader central San Joaquin Valley – Fresno, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced and Tulare counties. Over the six-county region, 718 people were hospitalized for COVID-19, including 680 confirmed cases and 38 suspected cases. Of 121 patients in ICUs across the Valley, all but one were confirmed cases.
This week is the first time Valley coronavirus cases in hospitals exceeded 700 since earlier February.
Monday’s Valleywide figures were almost 25% higher than a week earlier, and 4.2 times the number of inpatient cases from a month ago, when 84 patients were hospitalized with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 cases.
The number of coronavirus cases being treated in hospitals remains well below peaks from December and January, when the Valley was in the throes of a winter surge of new cases, hospitalizations and deaths.
At the zenith of that surge, hospitals were handing as many as 684 patients in Fresno County and more than 1,100 in the six-county area.
    =====================================
CENTRAL VALLEY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – As COVID-19 cases continue to rise, State Center Community College District (SCCCD) trustees voted to require all students and employees to get vaccinated.
The board voted 5-2 during a meeting on Monday in favor of the vaccine mandate.
The mandate requires students and employees on campus at Fresno City College, Reedley College, Madera Community College, and Clovis Community College to be vaccinated starting October 15.
The board says disciplinary action is still being drafted for those who refuse to be vaccinated.
Classes started at all four campuses on August 9.

I am attending Madera Community College. Masks have been required since the beginning of classes, and many classes remain on-line only.

    1. Good for the colleges!!

I was particularly interested in reading:
"The number of coronavirus cases being treated in hospitals remains well below peaks from December and January"
because here in Vermont we *are* matching our December-January totals, despite the fact that 85.9% of eligible Vermonters have received at least one dose of the vaccine. (What *does* it take!?!)

    2. Some comparative data for California plus Fresno and surrounding counties:

      Fully vaccinated: 45%

      Madera County [Population about 153,000]
      30/6 Hosp/ICU
      FV: 40%

      Kings County [Population about 155,000]
      63/9 Hosp/ICU
      FV: 31%

    3. Speaking of "what does it take," by showing proof of full vaccination to officials at Madera Community College, I qualified for a $200 Amazon gift card (after 9/15). At Fresno City College they are offering a $250 gift card at the college bookstore. How many people that will motivate I don't know, but it sounds pretty good to me. I don't know if I can purchase lottery tickets on Amazon, but it is something to think about [grin]. Hmmmmm.... Amazon is supposed to be the "everything store." Looking......looking.....looking....looking..... well, shoot. They sell fake lottery tickets and a movie called "Lottery Ticket," but none of the real thing. I guess that road to riches is all shot to Hell.

  5. With this new variety of Covid being so transmissible, I suppose that the pattern of spread will inevitably be erratic.

  6. Comparative data:
Illinois -- population 12.49M ;2005 hospitalized, 405 in ICU; 50.4% with two doses, 65.1% with at least one done.
Cook County -- population 5.15M ;no hospitalization data; 22,511 total cases in last 30 days; 56.5% with two doses, 72.9% with ot least one.

My data source shows that 55.0% of Californians have had two doses. I can only guess that Alan is quoting percentages of those eligible for the vaccine, not of the entire population.

    1. You are probably right, Bill. I took the data directly from the state public health department information page without inspecting it carefully.
