  2. Very happy to learn today that my alma mater, Goddard College in Vermont, is opening its campus to Afghan refugee families! The college, which is progressive and alternative, recently changed to all off-campus study. So the dorms and grounds are largely unused. It's a pretty setting, and I hope it brings peace to the families. If anyone would like a way to contribute to the families, let me know. I am sure there will be local opportunities.

  3. What a pandemic of the unvaccinated looks like [when most unvaccinated are Republicans] [Click] WaPo, but not behind a paywall. Striking graphical presentations of data—more so as you go down the page. Might this be enough to have electoral consequences in 2022? One would think so, but at least some of those people
are taking bovine/equine worming medicine to prevent or treat Covid-19. [Click]

    1. Huh. For some reason it let me through, which it normally doesn't. Different browser, maybe? I will see if I can find another source.

    2. I don't find another source for it at this time, but I can read it with Firefox and Chrome browsers. Those are the only functional browsers I have on this computer. Well, there is another that is often useful for getting around paywalls, but it is a rare one and usually doesn't work on the WaPo site--and doesn't work for this column.

    4. Chrome is my default browser, which WaPo apparently recognizes. But when I pasted the URL into Edge, which I essentially never use, I got in.

    5. I got in, through Safari, no problem.

      Fascinating graphs!

    6. A newer version of Safari works on my other computer, as do Opera and Vivaldi (an improved version of Opera). But Firefox (my customary deafault browser) won't let me comment here. Hmmmm.... it had been slow for some time; maybe I should clear its cache.

    7. That is, firefox on my alternate computer won't let me post here. Works find from my laptop.

  4. New Change Research Poll: Most California Voters Oppose Recall of Gavin Newsom [Click] The interpretation is clouded by the fact that results are broken down by Democratic voters (46% of those registered) and Republicans (24%), but ignore No Party Preference voters (24%) [and Other Party Preference (6%)]. Change Research is fairly well respected, but I am not totally convinced that their survey methodology is accurate. I have the most regard for the Berkeley/IGS surveys.

  5. The visibility and AQI this morning were if anything somewhat better than yesterday, but stepping outside just now (1PM) I could smell a bit of smoke. There is a new fire about 80 or 90 miles north of us, on this side of the Sierra Nevada. [Click]

  9. Fresno Bee Headline: Fresno, Valley hospitals ‘in worse condition today’ than winter’s COVID pandemic peak
The situation is so bad, some critically ill patients are being moved to other parts of the state. Every hospital bed is full, paramedics are ordered to assess calls for ambulance transport and deny it to those who do not absolutely need it. Hospitals report every bed is full, and there are fewer nurses and other staff than at January peak because of workplace exposures and subsequent quarantines. Covid patients are a large part of the problem, but regular non-covid cases are affected also—non-emergency surgeries, strokes, heart attacks, auto accident injuries, etc. This area has had a chronic shortage of medical personnel for a very long time—how many decades I don’t know.

  10. Alan, I heard in the last day or so that there are more fires in California and that the smoke will hang around for awhile yet. Sigh.

  11. It is becoming likely that Sirhan Sirhan is going to be paroled. I don't feel good about that. He was spared the death penalty and given life in prison instead. How is this life in prison? If he gets released does that bring back RFK? Yet two of the Kennedy sons support parole. I guess I haven't forgiven the guy for killing our best candidate and screwing up our politics from that day forward. I'm blown away that even the son who was a toddler at the time is forgiving.

  12. Well, we are off to Maine for the weekend. Double masking if we have to make a pitstop and have Lysol wipes in the car. Our precautionary Covid test was negative and everyone we are going to see has been super careful, all age 12+ are fully vaccinated. Still...hoping for some good ol' luck too. 🍀

  13. It's heartbreaking that Hurricane Ida is going to hit the same place that Katrina did, and exactly 16 years later.
