Adam Nossiter in the New York Times: America’s Afghan War: A Defeat Foretold? [Click] “Recent history suggests that it is foolish for Western powers to fight wars in other people’s lands and that the U.S. intervention was almost certainly doomed from the start.” Not a bad analysis, although it could have more examples and detail; but that would make it too long for a newspaper column.
I shouldn't speak too soon, but in just two days the wrist exercises I took up seem to have cured the tremor in my hands that was making it so hard for me to draw. Fingers crossed, so to speak.
You know, when acupuncture needles manage to redirect the flow of energy in the nerves, it does not take long for that to be accomplished. While I have not personally experienced acupuncture, I did take my mother for treatment and she swore that it helped. In her last decade, the doctor prescribed a mild muscle relaxant ehich resolved most of her aches and pains. Nerves being squeezed by tight muscles do not respond well. Physical therapy is perhaps not the best description of stretching tendons and muscles.
Nothing succeeds like success, but I took my better half to a well-reputed local acupuncturist some years ago. Said acupuncturist (Chinese) didn't realize that my wife could read the notes she was writing--upside-down at that. Her notes, combined with the "treatment" made it clear that she was a con artist, although she had previously worked for a reputable health-care organization.
So strange to think there's drought and fires out west and a hurricane bearing down on New England promising a three to five foot storm surge (with full moon high tide) and massive flooding.
I wish Catreona would pop by. I'm concerned for her and her family, as they are in the crosshairs of rain and wind. The soils are already saturated, too; so there will be a LOT of trees down with this storm, and massive power outages.
Yes, and with the previous storm this past week having soaked the landscape, trees will easily be uprooted by 30-40mph winds. Imagine what will happen also along the coast where winds of 50-80 are expected...!

Health officials warn people not to treat COVID-19 with a drug meant for worming livestock [Click] In Mississippi, where only 37% of the population is fully vaccinated, more than two-thirds of recent calls placed to the state’s poison control center were related to “ingestion of livestock or animal formulations of Ivermectin purchased at livestock supply centers,” the state department of health said in a news release. “You are not a horse,” the agency said. “You are not a cow. Seriously, y’all. Stop it.”
Still smokey here; AQI 122, predicted high temperature 91F. Not a breath of wind at the moment (8:15 AM).

DeleteColumn: New census shows fewer white Americans, but that’s because of how we’re counting. The media have largely ignored the huge surge in people who identify as multiracial.

ReplyDeleteJapan is having record rainfall too. We would be willing to take *part* of the load from either east coast.
