  1. Hallo all. I never made it to the blog yesterday. Our DIL woke in *severe* pain at 4:00am and Youngest took her to the hospital. Turns out she had an ovarian torsion (twisted ovary) and an 8” cyst weighing 6lb was the culprit. She had emergency surgery this afternoon and is home as of this evening. Bless their friend, Dave, who lives nearby, who was the 4:30am hero! We got there about 9:30am and took care of our three grands until late evening. (Same three grands who spent the weekend here.) Home now.

  3. Companies claim there’s a labor shortage. Their solution? Prisoners [Click] “Worker advocates say prison labor programs exploit workers with few options as bosses refuse to raise wages to attract employees.” I am reminded that the original meaning of “socialism” was a movement to ameliorate the excesses of unbridled capitalism.

  4. Seems it’s my turn, Alan…
It’s a sunny, not-so-blue sky day here in NW VT due to smoke haze from western fires at level Orange: hazardous to sensitive people

    3. Gee--I just checked the air quality index in Jericho, and it's 151! I think the worst we had with that big fire just to the north was only 57! Then down to 47, now up to 54. I see there is some rain in the Jericho forecast; maybe that will help to clear the air.

  5. NYT: Americans’ Medical Debts Are Bigger Than Was Known, Totaling $140 Billion [Click] “A new study finds that health care has become the country’s largest source of debt in collections. Those debts are largest where Medicaid wasn’t expanded.” Not much of a surprise, it seems to me.
Story here also, but NYT version is more complete. [Click]

    1. "more extensive" would be better than "move complete," I think.

  6. Suspected gunman in 2019 California synagogue shooting pleads guilty [Click] “Earlier this month, a San Diego judge ruled that survivors and families of victims. . .could sue Smith & Wesson, the manufacturer of the weapon Earnest allegedly used in the attack, as well as the gun store that sold the weapon to him.”

    1. The cowardly Clinton Democrats, the Third Way and Blue Dogs are what made a madman like trump possible. Sick and tired of "the party" trying to shut Progressives out.

    2. Yup. That's why I left "the party."

  8. Ross Douthat in the NYT: How to Reach the Unvaccinated [Click] Basically, he seems to be in favor of bribery and talking to them gently. I am reminded of the old saying that “You can lead a horse to water, but can’t make it drink,” as well as the old story about the fellow who can’t get his mule to move on down the road, no matter how much he shouts, curses, pulls on the reins, or applies the crop. A stranger comes by and asks what the problem is. The mule’s owner explains, and the stranger says the only thing that will work is to speak gently to the mule. The owner says “OK, show me.” The stranger steps over to the side of the road, picks up a good-sized tree branch, and hits the mule in the forehead so hard it staggers back on its haunches. The owner says “What are you doing? You tell me you’re going to talk gently to my mule, and then you hit him like that!” The stranger says “Yes, you have to talk gently to him; but first you have to get his attention.” Put me down as a terrible person, but I object to paying people to do what I did both for personal protection and as a civil duty. And I figure that death or near-death is what will be required to get their attention.
