    1. Thanks, puddle. That's the flower planted in honour of our 3rd Grand, who will turn 12 (and get vaccinated) this month!

I may need to swap it out to be a Purple Coneflower, as purple is now her favourite colour.

    2. Yes, your garden is lovely. I enjoy seeing photos of it because I am so bad that leaves wither and die at my approach.

    3. Update: Today I bought a tall, thin Purple Coneflower plant that is just beginning to flower, and set it in the ground directly beside this one. Then I took a photo of it for Granddaughter and she was tickled that it's making purple flowers too! 😉

    4. I just added a photo out front of the (so far) largest purple flower.

Susan, it's beginner's luck. Last year we just dug up the front yard, and put in flowers from garden center pots. We added some decent soil and compost around them, because our soil is terribly sandy. This year I simply added some compost at the start of the season. Mulched everything well and just have had to do minor weeding once a month. Perennial flowers are SO much easier than vegetables! Oh, and I use the sprinkler when we don't get rain.

"Former Stormy Daniels lawyer and Donald Trump antagonist Michael Avenatti was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison on Thursday for a failed scheme to extort Nike of more than $20 million.

U.S. District Judge Paul Gardephe handed down the sentence in a Manhattan court while chiding Avenatti as "drunk on power," according to Reuters. According to reports, Avennati cried as Gardephe read his sentence.

“I betrayed my own values, my friends, my family and myself,” Avenatti said, while in tears. “I betrayed my profession. I became driven by things that don’t matter in life.”

  3. We just felt a slight earthquake.

    1. Magnitude 4.8, a little east of Stockton, roughly 125 miles from here. [Click] Very unusual location, I think. We all felt it, and the chandeliers were swaying slightly (maybe an inch or two), but our grandfather clock’s pendulum was still keeping time just fine.

    2. Since then, a stronger earthquake up near the Sierra Nevada crest, a little south of Lake Tahoe; didn't feel that one here.

    3. Update: there were two earthquakes, about a minute apart, the first (M4.8) near Stockton, and the second (M6) a little south of Lake Tahoe.

    4. Thank you, Alan! I just saw news about the earthquake and my first thought was to come here and check to see if you'd felt it. I'm glad it was up in the hills and not in the valley.

    5. Magnitude 6.0 is nothing to sneeze at...!

      7.5km deep

    6. I should expect that is beneath the Sierra Nevada granite batholith. Think a huge block of granite being lifted up on the east side, so the western slope is much less than that on the east.

    1. Israel reports that the Pfizer vaccine's effectiveness dipped to 64% against the Delta variant. However, it was a very small sample, and not a very scientific report. At least it did say that Pfizer remained at least 93% effective against severe illness.

    2. I can't seem to enter that link with the proper headline. My comment is that the Israel data seems to be an outlier. However, other data suggests that a third shot will help immunocompromised people develop significant immunity.

    3. Here it is, Bill; but at least for me the story is behind a paywall. But it is from the Associated Press wire, so probably in lots of newspapers.
New research shows COVID-19 vaccines still offer strong protection against delta variant [Click]

And if a booster shot becomes available, all of us are going to get it, whether free or not.
