After two days I've finally restored internet connection to my desktop computer. The problem seemed to nave something to do with the ethernet connection between my router and the computer, but none of the obvious things, including ordering and installing a new ethernet cable, worked. But then I saw "reset your connection devices" and figured, "it can't hurt." And sure enough, when I clicked that and the computer restarted, I was connected again. No idea what the problem actually was or how it developed.
