  3. George Packer: How America Fractured Into Four Parts [Click] “People in the United States no longer agree on the nation’s purpose, values, history, or meaning. Is reconciliation possible?” I think the answer given at the end of the article is “yes.” A very long read, and a very heavy-duty one, which seems to clarify several things that I had not understood [e.g. what the Libertarians are in favor of]. I recommend it.

  5. An exercise for people who are out of shape: Begin with a five-pound potato bag in each hand. Extend your arms straight out from your sides, hold them there for a full minute, and then relax. After a few weeks, move up to ten-pound potato bags. Then try 50-pound potato bags, and eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-pound potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. Once you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag. —Beverly Gross

  6. One of my favorites from Facebook:

When I'm dying I'm going to swallow a whole bag of popcorn kernels.

    My cremation will be EPIC!

  7. There is still a lot of water in the river bottom below our house, but the level has fallen a bit. This morning we noticed sandbars starting to show that we hadn't seen in maybe two or three years. Wonderfully cool weather, and more on the way!

    1. So very like Kipling's peace rock in the Jungle book stories. When drought came to the jungle and the river level exposed the rock at the center of the river, all animals had to come to get water in peace. The tiger was not allowed to kill an antelope there, etc. It was a matter of survival.
