I just ordered two face masks from the good folks at BeauTies in Brattleboro, Vermont.
Susan...just to mention...celery is only about 5 calories per stick and is nice and crunchy so very satisfying to munch upon. I think it actually burns more calories to digest than you take in.
A little something to enjoy with one's morning crumpet:
The Country Is on the Cusp of a New Era [Click] “America is inching closer to a possibility it has never seen before: the indictment and trial of a former president.”
But can the Governor of Florida or New Jersey refuse to extradite Trump to New York? “[The Governor’s] role is really ministerial, and ultimately the state of New York can go to court and get an order to extradite the former president.” In fact, this is a rare circumstance in which the Constitution is quite explicit regarding a governor’s obligation to respect an extradition request from another state: Article IV, Section 2 provides that “a person charged in any state with treason, felony, or other crime … shall on demand of the executive authority of the state from which he fled, be delivered up, to be removed to the state having jurisdiction of the crime.” A statute of troubling origins dating from 1793 and known as the Fugitive Slave Act sets forth procedures for extradition, which the Supreme Court has affirmed [in 1987].
Well, DT is in NJ now where the Governor is Phil Murphy, who is a Democrat from Needham, MA (just outside Boston) and went to Harvard. Seems to be a good chance he'd extradite.
One point not mentioned, perhaps because it is speculative, is that low-propensity Republican voters may take the restrictions as a signal not to vote while low-propensity Democratic voters may become more likely to vote as a matter of revenge.
Burlington hit 92ΒΊF, which is a record for this date, and at my house we hit at least 90ΒΊF. The humidity was getting up there (about 40%) but has fallen a little now. I do not like humidity with heat, and I despise anything over 80ΒΊF.
His focus on Greyhound rings false. For one thing, he seems to pretend that Magabus operates only on the coastal corridors. That's just flatly not so. Then there are scores if not hundreds of regional bus lines, such as Van Gelder that I take from Chicago to Madison. And do I need to mention that Amtrak operates busses? Maybe I do.
We used to have two intercity bus lines here, Orange Belt and Greyhound. Orange Belt folded quite some time ago, done in by airlines. Greyhound is not doing well. When I was a kid, Greyhound would stop along the highway to pick up and let off passengers. Maybe about five or ten years ago I found myself near the main San Francisco Greyhound terminal, which I remember as chockablock with buses and passengers around the clock; I found it nearly deserted--just like my folks spoke of the downtown SF railway station.
The Oakland Mole [Click] “Over an average twenty-four hour period in 1920, Oakland Pier Terminal was handling 763 mainline and suburban passenger trains, and 56,000 passengers.”
I've taken it far more often than I have Greyhound, to more than one destination (with smaller city stops in between). Unfortunately, deferred maintenance has rendered it unreliable. I gave up after a 12-hour trip to Chattanooga tuned into a 24-hour trip.
Yesterday at Costco I saw one customer without a mask. Today at Winco (a large grocery store) I saw four or five. I suppose the workers don't figure it is worth it to insist on masks, considering the new and confusing CDC guidelines, coupled with the behavior of (at least) some resisters. I could be mistaken, but think the state and county mask requirements for stores extend through the middle of June. Refusing to wear masks might be a way of acting out for the lunatic fringe types.
Everyone was respecting the store's mask policy today, here, but people have stopped being respectful of keeping 6ft apart. I felt crowded several times while selecting items, and just left that aisle for a time. I have ALWAYS preferred a little space. I'm going to miss it.

Daughter's best friend's daughter's bat mitzvah is Saturday morning and we are attending via Zoom. I sincerely hope there is a cease fire before then.

DeleteWe can certainly hope!

DeleteThings changed greatly in the 1950s and '60s, for busses as well as trains. But why focus on Greyhound to the exclusion of its competitors?
DeleteMaybe because it doesn't seem to have any significant competitors. Things may be different in very large cities.
DeleteCan't say as I have ever heard of Magabus.
