Black Swallowtail!

A male Black Swallowtail Butterfly has hatched!

What amazes me is that he picked the day after the frost warning,
as we are entering a week of warm weather. How did he know?

See the three Chrysalises below?
The topmost (a female) hatched last September.
The middle and lowest overwintered in our garage.

This butterfly spun his chrysalis on August 31st!
There is one more soon to hatch, which spun the Chrysalis on September 4th. Stay tuned!

    1. I think the Ohio lottery is a great idea and suggest that the federal government give winners a month of free Obamacare, thereby achieving two goals at once.
I do know that certain populations are really keen about contests and winning, even things they do not actually want. To be a winner is satisfying in iteself.
When we attend Republican ladies' events to hear public officials, they always sell tickets for a lottery where the "winner" gets half of whatever was contributed to the pot. Door prizes are also much favored and our CVB always features little quizzes that get the winning answer a prize.

    2. I'm hearing the term "reentry anxiety." I am not feeling "anxiety" about not wearing a mask. I just think it is very poor guidance, given that children 11 and under are not yet eligible for a vaccine. And it kind of pisses me off that officials are suggesting that this valid concern is merely anxiety. How come it was essential that we wear masks when adults were at risk, but it doesn't matter when children are still at risk? What is wrong with our society that children aren't considered as much as adults? Children can and do still get Covid, and even if they get a mild case they can still be long haulers ~ acquiring lifelong heart or respiratory issues, among other maladies. And let's face it, their "lifelong" journey will likely be far longer than that of adults.

    1. Businesses that were shut down had the option of getting a loan to cover the wages of employees and, when they demonstrated that the employees had been paid and retained, the loan would be forgiven. Many opted not to go that route and laid people off and told them to apply for unemployment insurance insto which they had paid. Then, having a cushion, the workers sought other jobs, found them and are not going back. Our local Vietnamese Restaurant never cased operation and, for a while, went to total take-out. They passed out packets of subber gloves to their customers to validate the care they were taking.

  4. DeWine just ended the $300/week for the unemployed. This is the message I sent to him.

"Depriving the unemployed of $300 dollars a week to force them back to work is a particularly vicious and Republican act. You are deliberately causing financial hardship during the worst and most stressful year we have endured. It seems that everything Republicans do is anti-people and pro-business. That is why you have to gerrymander the state to hell and gone and suppress voters and destroy the mail in order to win elections. Show me anyone who wants to vote for a party DEDICATED to placing more obstacles in their way and creating more hardship in their lives. The last time I checked YOUR salary was nearly $150 thousand per year, yet you want to force people to labor for less than $15,000 a year. What is WRONG with you?"

  5. Republicans have relied for four decades on using the currency to control the population they disdain but are content to rule. Giving up their commitment to the almighty dollar is proving quite traumatic, because they have no alternative positive agenda. Fact is that the little people have $70 Billion a year to spend on lottery tickets. What's to prevent them from selecting and promoting their own candidates for office as AOC snd the squad have done? The parties are at an existential cross roads and all the voter suppression is not going to save them.
Ideally, monetary compensation is a reflection of relative value. However, when the currency is used as a tool of population control, its utility as a medium of exchange is negated.
