  1. U.S. to Sanction Russia Over Election Interference [Click] Oh, my!

“The Biden administration will impose a range of retaliatory measures against Russia on Thursday in response to Moscow’s alleged election interference, a widespread hacking campaign and other malign activity,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Using a new executive order, the measure will expand the existing prohibitions on U.S. banks trading in Russian government debt… Previous prohibitions targeting portions of Russian sovereign debt shook Russia’s markets and added to its economic woes.”

  4. Not before time-- Anne Boleyn said that in one of my Tudors, on hearing that Catherine had died. I thought it charming, it was the first time I'd ever heard it.

    1. It's new to me as well. I googled it and found it is widespread, but evidently not from Shakespeare. It is no included in my copy of Bartlett's Familiar Quotations. Obviously equivalent to "none too soon," which was current in my time.

    2. "no included" should be "not included," but might be a freudian slip resulting from checking The Scottish Play.

    3. I've heard it in various British shows. The one that comes to mind is As Time Goes By, with Judi Dench.

  5. New Cardiologist had papers for me to fill out. They wanted to know my "Ethnic Group". I wrote "human".

    1. You are not the only one to do such things. I have also considered writing in hundred yard for race.

    5. That's true; but "race" is to a large extent a social construct, and ethnicity is cultural. Perhaps "ancestry" with check-off boxes would be more accurate. But it could get very complicated; "Chinese" would include several more groups than just the Han. The simple approaches are imprecise to the extent of being potenitally misleading, and the accurate methods are burdensome. I am reminded of that denisovan gene carried by a large majority of Tibetans that protects from altitude sickness; a few percent of Han people also carry the gene. Sometimes there is just no good way to do things. I had occasion to review a number of coroners' reports from Mississippi for a while and they still had preprinted check-off boxes for "white" and "negro." It was hard to see what significance that had in modern times.

From Expired Munitions To Civilians Delivering Supplies, Capitol Police IG Details Failures [Click] “During the Jan. 6 Capitol breach, when officers from Washington, D.C’s Metropolitan Police Department came to help the overwhelmed U.S. Capitol Police, something interesting happened: MPD started using the types of “less-lethal” weapons than the Capitol Police had been barred from using and rioters… started leaving.”

    1. So, sounding like something of an inside job, eh?

    2. One can't help but think of that possibility, but I'm inclined to favor incompetence.

    3. Yes, I suppose "inside job" gives them too much credit for competence.

  9. Jeeps, everything seems goofy this morning--both Amazon cart and check out are so goofed up they can't be used, nor my credit card payment, nor a good part of facebook.

On the plus side my daily shrimp and tomato salad was superb, best I can remember. Left out the cottage cheese and added basil.

    Yeah, that's my life, lol!

  10. Actually am trying to save the cottage cheese until I have a new carton in the fridge.

Just called the bank for my balance, and it's the most I have ever had except when I sold my house. My $1400 came on April 7th. I have been officially poverty level since I retired, so it feels odd to me. But I'm grateful.
