Nicholas Burns, a career diplomat, is in the final stages of vetting to serve as President Biden’s ambassador to China, Axios reports. I checked his Wikipedia page, [Click] and he sounds like an outstanding nominee.
Body-cam footage shows Ohio man killed by police after struggle in hospital [Click] I worked in ER’s off and on for a number of years. From time to time we needed to restrain patients who were as violent as they come, and we never killed anyone. These cops went about it all wrong. They could have just grabbed all four appendages, put on the restraints, and then searched the fellow. All very ho-hum in a serious ER.
Yes, poor police training. "Qualified immunity" and the reliance on prosecutors to do their work for them has led to a deterioration of police standards. Our local police do not seem to know what investigation means and promotions are based on getting along with the team. So, it is a systemic problem.
Why Democrats Should Contest Every Race [Click] Quite the revelation. I remember a fellow from New England, Howard Somethingorother I think, who was saying that nearly twenty years ago. . .
True, when we ran Carol Shae-Porter in the NH primary, we had to persuade Pelosi to stay out of the state instead of supporting the Democratic choice and then, in a primary with four candidates, Carol got more than 50%. In the general, the press did not even show up for her victory celebration because the Republican incumbent was sure to "win." Then the DNC called an offered to help retire Carol's debts. But she had none. She was the people's candidate. Soon after, Judd Gregg started talking about "populism." That's code for "government by the people," which Republicans really abhor.
The current amount of donations to Tybre should be enough, or with good management more than enough, to fund four years at Fisk (John Lewis' alma mater).
Mr. Biden promised 100 million covid vaccinations in his first hundred days, later 200 million. I figure this is his 87th day in office, and as of yesterday 202 million vaccinations have been reported. So far no reports of Biden spending tax dollars on golf, but he does attend church. Quite a change.
Here's a set of columns from the NYT with a common thread, all good IMO. I trimmed the URL's a bit, which might make them more accessible. If it doesn't, try different browsers, or search for the titles.
The New Deal’s Capitalist Lessons for Joe Biden [Click] The most effective part of F.D.R.’s program wasn’t its direct spending. It was his use of U.S. financial might to reignite business.
F.D.R. Took Down Giants. Biden Can, Too. [Click] Roosevelt’s choice to run the antitrust wing of the Justice Department, Robert Jackson, took just 14 months to change the country.
Our local [Fresno County] Covid hospitalization numbers are down to 98, equal to those of early November and down from a maximum of 625 in early to mid January.
Naomi got her first dose of vaccine this morning; a four-lane drive-through setup at the local junior college. Super well organized and systematic.
The site I use for Covid-19 information is still not reliable, but I looked at it today (and at my line-a-day diary). On 4/16/20 there were 8,414 cases. On 4/16/21 there are 1,050,112.
Left some comments on the previous thread.
