We didn't end up having pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, so I'll make some for Wil for breakfast on Ash Wednesday. None for me, since pancakes are bland without maple syrup, and I'm not consuming sugar just now. I'll have an omelette or something. We don't fast, but we do watch our diet.
So, it's Ash Wednesday. I serve as spiritual guide for a number of clergy and lay leaders for whom this will be a strange, busy, not busy enough day. Some are creating DIY kits complete with a little consecrated bread and wine (or grape juice), and a little dose of ashes made from burning last year's Palm Sunday palms. Folks pick up their DIY kits on the church steps. Then the clergy will offer services online.
I'm thinking it will be very meaningful for many. Truly, we have already had 11 months of "going without." I suggest, rather than giving up something for Lent, that folks choose to keep watch for and participate in Joy throughout Lent. After all, the point of Lent is to turn toward God.
The less coarse the better! It was supposed to be a feast of fat things. "Making pancakes was the last chance to indulge in sweet treats before the 40 days of Lent began. The day also proved a perfect opportunity to use up any foods that couldn't be eaten during Lent."
Today, I would think a more fitting meal would begin with steak and end with ice cream sundaes! LOL.
I rather enjoyed it myself. Not sure whether to pull for the black hole or the planet. But I think they ought to refer to it as Object X, by way of a nod to Pluto being Planet IX. Nice that there is potential for it to be figured out within the next several years.
More power to them. Sounds to me like the KKK act was tailor made for this application. Also, I like the idea of hitting Trump in the wallet. Probably far more effective than any criminal penalty.
It being a civil case, the standard of proof is not "beyond a reasonable doubt," but "more likely than not." Then the allocation of responsibility has potential for considerable amusement. Sometimes it is allocated by defendant, a set percentage to each. Another choice is make not just all, but as well each responsible for the whole thing. And the defendants can file cross-complaints against one another-- telling the court "Sue him, not me!"

I suppose that in medieval times pancakes were far coarser food than today--generally food for peasants. Maybe more akin to corn dodgers.

I stand corrected. My memory is sometimes a little spotty that far back...
