  1. We're on the verge of breakdown: a data scientist's take on Trump and Biden [Click] What this fellow, and the others mentioned, describe, I can see evolving over the past fifty years—most of my lifetime. They don’t address the nearly complete restructuring of the upper middle class during that time; and it can be seen as a sort of angular view of Marx’s application of hegelianism to political economy. In short, what else is news? But we will probably see references to their idea of "splintering of elites." It might be worth reading in order to familiarize oneself with the term and its origin.

  2. Matt Davies Cartoon [Click] A little less than three days to go. . .

Time is getting very short for Mr. Trump to do any pardoning. . .wonder if he might be too down in the dumps to get around to it.

    2. President Trump is preparing to issue around 100 pardons and commutations on his final full day in office Tuesday, a major batch of clemency actions that includes white collar criminals, high-profile rappers and others but — as of now — is not expected to include Trump himself, CNN reports.

  5. Pro-Trump Protests Fizzle Out At Capitol Buildings Across The U.S. [Click] Sounds like they’re pretty easily discouraged. It took at least a whiff of the grape to discourage the Parisian mobs a couple of centuries back.

    1. Sounds like things were pretty laid=back in Montpelier, listener. California will be sending more than 300 Army National Guard members to DC; transport courtesy of Air National Guard.

Somewhere down the line, "Compare and contrast the Trump Insurrection with the Beer Hall Putsch" should make a good college essay question, non?

    1. Two big contrasts:
      1. Hitler accompanied the putschers and had a plan for at least the initial steps of taking over the Bavarian government; those initial steps proved insufficient in the longer run. Trump sat in the White House and the rioters had no plan whatsoever once they had captured the Capitol.
      2. It was this pursch and the subsequent treason trial that brought Hitler to the attention of the German public. Trump doesn't need any more publicity.

  10. The weatherperson has warned of high winds and blowing dust tomorrow and the next day; certainly no sign of it today. Today we dealt with some badly overgown and intergrown vines along a fence in the back yard. After pruning them and piling them up, I discovered that I could easily cut them up with our electric hedge trimmer. Tomorrow we plan to finish pruning the vines with hand shears, and I will try cutting up the front yard prunings (wisteria, roses, some plum prunings. Then the only tree we have left to deal with is the tangelo, which will be a bit of a job--have to prune some out of the center using a chain saw (electric), and it has thorns. Also one or two dead limbs.

  11. “U.S. defense officials say they are worried about an insider attack or other threat from service members involved in securing President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, prompting the FBI to vet all of the 25,000 National Guard troops coming into Washington for the event,” the AP reports.

“The massive undertaking reflects the extraordinary security concerns that have gripped Washington following the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol by pro-Trump rioters. And it underscores fears that some of the very people assigned to protect the city over the next several days could present a threat to the incoming president and other VIPs in attendance.”

About time, it seems to me.

Trigger alert: Use any analogy you want, I want to get real for a minute. I used up my graphic content warning on a cat killing a bird, but be fore warned. You can't un-rape some one. The Capitol assault on the 6th was a rape of democracy. As I have shared before, in past lives I was a way stop on the battered women's under ground railway to freedom. As such I faced men with guns twice. Law enforcement will tell you domestic abuse calls are the most dangerous they face. The rape victim was Lady Liberty, raped after the divorce by the ex., and right now the ex is violating a restraining order, after being released on parole. The Guard is being called in for good reason.
