    3. In today's mail we each received a postage paid postcard to return to the Town Clerk to request an absentee ballot. We immediately filled out the cards and mailed them back!

Now I'm wondering what Primary Day (Aug 11th) and Election Day (Nov 3rd) will look like. I usually work at the polls, but I think I might instead be asked to help open and count absentee ballots!

  5. A new Monmouth poll finds Joe Biden leading Donald Trump in the presidential race nationally, 53% to 41%. Half of the electorate says they have ruled out voting for Donald Trump in November, while 4 in 10 say the same about Joe Biden. 21% of registered voters do not have a favorable opinion of either Donald Trump or Joe Biden; Biden leads Trump among these voters, 55% to 21% (in 2016 Trump won them 47% to 30%).

“I’m concerned about voter registration in Mississippi. The blacks are having lots of events for voter registration. People in Mississippi have to get involved, too.”
    — Mississippi election commissioner Gail Welch, quoted by the Hattiesburg American.

  6. Former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain was admitted to a hospital and is being treated for Covid-19, Newsmax reports. A photo shows Cain at President Trump’s rally in Tulsa with no face mask. Hmmmmm. . . . the timing is about right.

Carville thinks Trump may drop out. [Click] That would be very amusing, but I will not be holding my breath waiting for it to happen.

[Two] GOP senators propose swapping Columbus Day with Juneteenth as federal holiday [Click] I wonder how that will go down with other members of their caucus.

    1. Chortle du jour:

Less than 24 hours before Herman Cain was hospitalized with coronavirus, he tweeted about President Trump’s July 4th celebration at Mt. Rushmore: “Masks will not be mandatory for the event, which will be attended by President Trump. PEOPLE ARE FED UP!”

    2. Wasn't Carville the guy who told us Hilary Clinton was the only candidate who could bet Trump in 2016?

    4. I think it's more likely that Republicans may clamor for their Convention to nominate someone else as the GOP candidate. If that is in the works, DT might quit, just so they can't kick him out, so to speak. Or maybe the highest donor gets to tell him "You're fired!"??

  9. Here is a tool, via NPR, such that you can hover your cursor over a county and see how the county is doing with COVID-19. I was gratified to hear on NPR that Hawaii and Vermont are doing best in the nation. That was comforting to hear on a day when we had 17 (argh!) new cases.

  12. "The primary reason for wearing a face mask is to prevent personal droplets from spreading to others.
"Researchers at Florida Atlantic University, in a study published in the journal Physics of Fluids on Tuesday, found that bandanas reduced the average distance that coughs traveled from 8 feet to 3.6 feet. A folded handkerchief took that distance down to 1.25 feet. Commercial cone masks reduced the distance to 8 inches, and a two-layer, stitched mask to 2.5 inches."
