  1. Administration Shelves CDC Guide to Reopen Country [Click] It has been leaked at least once, which means that it will be published before long. That’s too big a story to be able to keep it secret.

“What have you got to hide? I’d love to hear what the CDC has to say.”
    — Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont (D), quoted by CNN, on news that the White House is blocking the release of CDC guidelines to re-open the economy safely.

    1. I know I'm prejudiced, but I automatically suspect New York media claiming New York is the center of anything. And the article's own graphs, if you actually pay attention to them, show that hte NYC strain represented less than half of Illinois cases.

  3. Critics alarmed by US nuclear agency's bid to relax rules on radioactive waste [Click] I’d say it’s not altogether indefensible if “very low level waste” should be well defined, but in the Trump administration’s hands that’s an awfully big “if.”

    1. Just for you, Susan:

Wil’s response was “Yes! I hope he kisses him goodnight every night.”

    2. That is most interesting; thanks, listener. The story says the WH uses the Abbott Labs rapid Covid-19 test. I double-checked my recollection, and verified that it detects not the antigen [virus], but antibodies to it. In fact, it detects the IgG antibodies, which are the second class to develop. So a person may test "negative" who is in the early stages of an infection, and will test "positive" when recovered. There is a window where the test will be useless.

  6. Yes! I'm with Wil! And I hope the guy coughs all over his pillow several times a day.

Ohio: COVID: 22,131 and 1,271 deaths.

Gov. DeWine is going to start opening hair salons etc. on 5/15 and then restaurants for dine-in on 5/21. I think we're going to see a giant spike in Ohio.

  8. Guess my comment above was ill-founded. Out-of-State Visitors Flocked to Georgia [Click] To get their hair and nails done, eat in restaurants, etc. And took souvenirs back home with them to share with the neighbors. Presumably. Georgia borders Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, North and South Carolina. Give it another couple of weeks.

  11. Just came in from gardening on the south side of the house, and wondered what the temperature was. We aren’t yet acclimated this year, but it did seem pretty warm. 93 deg. F now (4PM). Supposed to be 99 tomorrow. But when I opened the weather program, I saw these headlines:

Florida Panhandle Wildfires Burn Homes; Hundreds Ordered to Evacuate
Hundreds of structures south of I-10 are threatened in Santa Rosa County.

    Northeast Could See Bombogenesis
An extreme weather pattern, with snowflakes and record cold, is setting up for Mother's Day weekend.

    110°F in China Already?
Wildfires are raging in Russia, and at least three countries saw their most intense April heat on record.
