How Bailout Backlash and Moral Hazard Outrage Could Endanger the Economy [Click] “People are increasingly focusing not on preventing a depression but on which recipients of federal rescue are morally worthy.” Well, that’s America for you; nothing new there [IMO]. Half measures by Congress create a sense of scarcity, which causes panic. Remember that what we have called a “depression” since 1930 was previously called a “panic.”
Most Say U.S. In a Recession or Depression [Click] “A new Gallup poll found that 42% of Americans say the economy is now in a recession, and another 30% say the economy is now in a depression.” The weird thing is they seem to think it will be over in a matter of months.
Bloomberg Opinion: If Trump Has a Recovery Plan, It's a Mystery [Click] “On the most consequential question of his term, the president seems to be out of ideas.” His Imperial Vacuity out of ideas? Go on!
Mourning in America [Click] “The Lincoln Project is out with a brutal new ad that plays off of Ronald Reagan’s famous 1984 “Morning In America” ad — but not in a good way.”
These ads write themselves. “Are you better off than you were four years ago?” should certainly be effective, and there are probably several other riffs on successful campaign slogans as well.
Malaria 'completely stopped' by natural symbiotic parasite [Click] It seems they have only studied Plasmodium falciparum (the most dangerous kind for humans), not Plasmodium vivax (the most common kind). One outstanding thing about this method of control is that it doesn’t kill the mosquitos, so doesn’t harm creatures that feed on mosquitos.
From the Tribune: "Gov. J.B. Pritzker reports 2,341 new known COVID-19 cases as well as 46 additional fatalities, the lowest daily death toll in two weeks
The governor also said that the number of people hospitalized and the percentage of ICU beds occupied are down from a week ago."
The Small-Business Die-Off Is Here [Click] “Many small businesses won’t survive, and that will change the landscape of American commerce for years to come.” For years? For decades or generations, more like.
There are always new entrepreneurs. That's the way small business works. A lot of the companies we've seen for decades will be gone, but new ones will start up given maybe a year. One of the local ironies is that two of Oak Park's longest established restaurants closed in January, before coronavirus was a thing.
Good cartoon, listener. A second response sign immediately occurred to me: "Enjoy your ventilator." But that is less inclusive than "See you soon."
