    1. Just announced: A gradual reopening of Retail beginning May 18th.
Masks and distancing required for all, and no more than 25% of maximum
      legal capacity in the space.

We can now conduct 1000 tests per day, and for even mild symptoms.
      No cost.
      (It’s a nasal swab.)

Now testing all prison staff and all prisoners in any facility where even one positive case has occurred.

Also testing first responders, healthcare workers and childcare providers who serve same.

      Big News!
Returning from another state, after quarantining for 7 days, you can have a test. If negative, you can end quarantine!

We are implored to keep a daily log of contacts.

  2. I Just Flew. It Was Worse Than I Thought It Would Be. [Click] “The surreal experience of flying during a pandemic, and the false promise of a return to normal.”

Air Travel Is Going to Be Very Bad, for a Very Long Time [Click] “Flying used to be unpleasant. But scarcity, low demand, and public-health risks could make it unbearable.”

I wonder how things are with Amtrak. From Fresno to Southern California the usual route involves a bus. I may investigate whether I can (should it be necessary) manage to work around that. Probably not, though.

    1. I've just checked Amtrak. You can take the train from Fresno to Bakersfield, with bus connections to Las Angeles or San Diego.

    2. Actually, one can take either the bus or the train between Los Angeles and San Diego, but I rather wish one didn't have to change from train to bus between Bakersfield and LA. One can go up to the SF Bay Area by train, then catch a train down along the coast and thence to LA or San Diego, but that is impractical. I think the way the southbound passenger trains used to go was to loop around to the east and enter LA from that direction, rather than from the north. The HSR tracks are designed to be usable by conventional trains until the HSR system is completed, but now the project has been discontinued (although the portions already funded will be completed, except for electrification). The train sure is low stress, and the fares (especially at the "golden agers" rate) can't be beat. I suppose they are limiting the numbers of people on the buses.

    3. The climb over the Tehachepi Mountains at the south end of Calfornia's Central Valley is far too steep for trains; the downhill grade has a number of escape ramps for runaway big rigs.

    4. The High Speed Rail Authority will eventually be boring tunnels through those mountains, like the tunnels through the Rockies. But that's some years off.

    5. The last I heard they were planning to approach LA from the NE by way of a tunnel through a congested pass; but it is a seismically active area. On the other hand, the approaches to LA have been filled in with suburbs during the past century.

  4. Joe Biden’s choice of running mate may have huge implications for Democrats. Here’s why. I'm constantly getting emails asking in one way or another who I want for vice president. They're fundraising emails, of course. Who Biden chooses isn't my business and Biden wouldn't listen anyway. Still, this in-depth article told me some things I didn't know.

    1. Cool! Wil and I both have some Neanderthal...something like 4%. Youngest has even more than we have, so he may have gotten it from both sides. He weighed 10lbs,1 oz at birth.

  7. It's no accident Britain and America are the world's biggest coronavirus losers [Click] “Even before the pandemic hit, both nations had been stripped of the people and systems required to respond effectively.” Yeah, I can buy that.

  8. Oh my. One of the seekers I sit with, who has to do a lot of Zoom for work, has asked if he may come to my house, bringing his own chair, and meet with me in my back yard...!

You may be sure that I have declined. My back yard is not conducive to a perfectly confidential meeting anyway. But as I have not even gotten together with my family (grand children!), I am certainly not willing to meet with others! I let him know that for the foreseeable future (which may be until a vaccine is available), I can meet by Zoom or phone.

I am sorry to have to disappoint him. Truly. And also sorry not sorry. Y'know?

    1. Surely God is present on Zoom, is S/He not? The question is whether one is aware of the presence. The finite does not contradict the infinite, if I may be allowed to mix up religions a bit.
