Local Walk: It's definitely Spring

Here is Alan’s screen capture, of how prepared, financially, the various states are:

VERMONT NEWS:
4 weeks ago Vermont was doubling the rate of COVID-19 cases every 2-3 days.  Then it went to every 5 days. Two weeks ago it was every 2 weeks. Now it is every 37 days!

This is why we can begin to open up just a little bit.  [Not like Georgia, opening up even before they hit peak!]  We hit peak around April 4th, as Eldest’s graphs show.

  1. America is failing to handle its worst crisis in 80 years [Click] “The coronavirus pandemic has infected 878,000 Americans (and the real number is likely to be much, much higher), killed at least 50,000 in the country, and forced 26 million to lose their jobs. All in the span just two months. Without question, it’s the worst crisis the United States has faced since the Great Depression and World War II. And so far, this country’s national leaders and federal government have failed to meet the enormity of the moment.”

    1. I just saw a campaign poster.

“BIDEN: He won’t inject you with bleach.”

So this is what we’ve come to.

  4. Glad to hear about Vermont’s fiscal rectitude, listener. [Click] I found a summary of the Moody’s results, and will be sending you a screen capture to post.

  5. Check out the front page!!

I just added Alan's screen capture showing how each state will likely fare financially, based on how prepared they are for a recession.

Also, I added two graphs my son created showing the curve and the leveling off we are seeing. Hurrah! It can happen!! We need to be careful not to become complacent. But we are seeing a little bit of an ease, and a little bit of opening up of business.

  6. 827/44 (+2/+1)
    5.3%
    Hospitalised 12 (-3)
    Tests 14,310 (+458)

2.2% of Vermonters have been tested.
    5.78% of tests were positive.
5.3% of those resulted in death.

Today, Governor Scott announced that work crews under 5, such as construction workers and landscapers, but also including manufacturing, etc., may return to work. Garden Centers may open keeping to no more than 10 total staff + customers at any one time. All employees must be trained in keeping wise social distancing and protection, and cleaning of surfaces.
Also, self employed people may apply now for benefits. The State has streamlined the application processes (so one does not have to wait to hear on one type of assistance before they can apply for another type; instead they are considered concurrently). Also, with the new Federal relief bill passing, to help small businesses, Rep. Peter Welch is recommending that farmers also apply for that assistance.

  7. Another thing to mention about Vermont is the transparency we are seeing. Gov Scott is holding a press briefing (via TV and radio) every M-W-F at 11:00am, for as long as is needed (usually about 2 hours). The reason it goes that long is that the Gov and his health experts take ALL questions from every media outlet in the State until all questions are answered. If they don’t have an answer they have it by the next briefing. We are impressed, grateful and able to trust our leadership. What a concept.

    1. Gee! Pretty radical, all right! If he keeps that sort of thing up, he might be reelected...

    2. Not bad for a Republican.

Still, I don’t agree with him on education funding and more. But first things first.

  10. Illinois has been in bad fiscal shape for decades. The November ballot will have a constitutional amendment allowing a graduated income tax, which would have made a big difference absent the pandemic.

    1. No graduated income tax? That's worth changing, certainly. California's tax structure is based on the economy of the past, and gyrates depending on the stock market. I think it needs to be changed to better reflect the current economy.

  11. The Illinois stay-at-home order has been extended through the end of May, with alterations. Most notably, masks are now explicitly required inside public spaces such as stores. The list of essential businesses has been slightly expanded and nonessential businesses can now open for delivery or curbside pickup only. Most state parks (but not Starved Rock) will reopen and fishing and boating by no more than two people will be allowed.

Testing has once again pushed the number of confirmed new cases to the highest level ever, but officials believe the true number is plateauing or will soon.
