  1. Very nice looking stonework in the building to the left.

    1. Indeed. Likely hand constructed. It’s one of the collected buildings in the Shelburne Museum. Imagine a family living in that small stone structure as their entire house. It still contains many of the original furnishings.

  3. Thanks, Listener. Yes, the nurses were great! Well, except for the male nurse who wanted to know if Dad would help me change into the hospital gown. I was a trifle snappish with him, I'm afraid. Dad did not rebuke me for that. He was horrified at the idea himself. But, Patrick found Roberta to help me and she was wonderful. Once that was sorted out, I got to chatting a bit with Patrick, who turned out to be a nice guy, if perhaps a touch dense at times. A young lady named Eva looked after me when I came back to Recovery, and she was sweet. Roberta also came back after a while. I couldn't have asked for nicer nurses. The other staff were very pleasant as well.

All is not lollipops and roses though. Dad read me the paper the pharmacy gave him with the medication. Naturally, there's a list as long as your arm of possible side effects, including death. But what frightened me was something near the top of the list:

Increased risk of hip, spine and wrist fractures for persons suffering from osteoporosis.

I was already terrified of fracturing a hip or my spine. Now this medication increases that risk. Guess I'll have to redouble my efforts at caution.

    1. My sweetie was on Fosamax for quite a while--longer than generally suggested, but the bone density scans seem not to have improved. However, when some years later she had back surgery, the surgeon said "Whatever you're doing, keep on doing it!" Her bones were definitely stronger than usual for her age; she had simply continued taking calcium pills with vitamin D. "Your mileage may differ."

  5. Hurricane Dorian--185 mph sustained winds, 23-foot storm surge. I just can't imagine such a thing.

    1. Here are a few good sites by which to keep informed:

This is the Florida radar loop. Dorian’s eye is now visible on the radar loop and it also shows the projected path, so one can see if it is on track or not. So far it’s still trending due west.

This is a blog called Category 6. The articles are intelligent and useful. It was begun by a former hurricane hunter, Doc Masters, who writes it with Bob Hansen, a great meteorologist. Best of all, if you click on the latest article and scroll to the bottom of it, there is a blog on which folks discuss the storm and post all sorts of interesting details and graphics. It’s so fast paced that while you read for 5 minutes 40 new posts will be added!
