We could use a few conservatives like this one, with spine and sense!

    1. What seems to me to be the basic problem seems unaltered: Parliament has disapproved of every offered course of action, and approved of none for the past three years. It's hard to see how they could get their act together in a few days or even in several weeks. Dum spiro, spero.

  3. No telling what is going to happen in the UK: Boris Johnson has lost his majority in the Commons. In order to call an election, he needs the support of Labour. The last I heard court cases on his right to prorogue Parliament are still in progress (the one in Scotland may be the most consequential)

  5. House of Commons news:

MPs have backed the motion to allow a debate on a bill tomorrow that would prevent a no-deal Brexit on 31 October by 328 votes to 301 - a majority of 27.

Boris Johnson says he is tabling motion for general election because he will not accept Benn bill

Jeremy Corbyn says, if Johnson wants an election, he must get the bill ruling out no-deal passed first.

SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford says SNP also wants Benn bill passed before general election called.

Jo Swinson, the Lib Dem leader, says MPs must act responsibly. She says she backs the idea of an election, but not before MPs have removed the risk of the UK crashing out of the EU without a deal.

  6. Alan, I should emphasize that nothing much happens in Goodbye Mr. Chips. There is a remote possibility you might not like it. But if you want a quiet, heartwarming read, you can't do better IMO.
