Rosie T. Bear

Younger Granddaughter in Maine got a light pink Vermont Teddy Bear when she stayed with us almost 4 years ago.  She was 6 years old at the time.  Recently, through some unclarified incident, poor Rosie T. Bear's head popped off...!  Fortunately, the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory has a Teddy Bear Hospital and the bears have full health care for life!  So I brought Rosie back to Vermont with me last Saturday.  On my birthday, we stopped at the Bear Hospital.  We learned that ordinarily it takes 3-4 weeks in recovery before bears are released from care. However, as Dr. Nancy was available Rosie was back in our arms in less than an hour! So on Wednesday, Rosie was mailed home in the special box Vermont Teddy Bear supplies (complete with air hole!).  She should arrive today and be back snug in her Mama's waiting arms. And Gramie comes off looking pretty great. πŸ’–

  1. Good work, Grammie!

Our new refrigerator/freezer is in action. The front is bowed just a bit, and the door handles are extremely long--which make it seem bigger than it is when one stands nearby.

I received from my 2nd cousin on Vancouver Island a copy of a letter written by our great-grandfather. I think it is the first letter I have read that was written in Round Hand, and the capital "I" [eye] in particular wasn't recognizable at first. There were also some old terminal letters that used to be included in Palmer--"t"and "r" had special forms at the ends of words. And our great grandfather had a way of writing "x" that I mean to copy--it is very easy, fast and logical--and unusual if not unique. It is not the way I learned, it is not the way specified in Palmer, Spencer, or Round Hand. Coming off the end of the previous letter, the pen makes an upward arc opening to the left; then the pen is lifted off the paper, and a downward arc opening to the right is made from the upper left of the letter to the bottom line and thence into the beginning of the following letter.

  2. Well done, Grammy!

Sis loved the idear of a bear hospital and of the patient being sent home in a bear box. It gave me a smile too.

Alan, have you ever seen a handwritten capital Q that looked like a loopy 2? That's the way my mother makes hers.

    1. That's the only way I am familiar with it. Actually, it starts out with an oval like certain forms of "A" and then loops around into the tail. Making the oval look like a real oval takes some work and most people don't bother. I understand that the Palmer Method of penmanship persisted in the Catholic schools longer than it did in the public schools, but it was still the standard in my elementary school, although the teachers who knew how to teach the full method (notably the posture, motions of fingers, hand, and arm) had mostly retired by that time and we were never taught that.

      Spencerian [Click]

      Round Hand [Click]

Here is another Spencerian form with a non-two-ish Q [Click] It doesn’t surprise me, but I never saw it before.

  3. Megan

Guys, it’s still not good. We had a long night. He had low blood pressures that needed intervention. I was just waiting for them to call a code. This morning he is still on the vent. He’s not as sedated so he’s uncomfortable and also unhappy. He now has a feeding tube that they’re using to give him his oral meds. He’s thirsty wants to drink, which he can’t. They’re talking about putting a central line in his neck. Trying to decide if they put a dialysis catheter because his kidneys keep declining. He doesn’t need dialysis yet, but they want to be prepared. His bone marrow doctor asked him if that’s what he wants. He asked how far we go. I told him that tanner DOES NOT want to die. And tanner nodded in agreement . So for now they will continue to do everything they can to get him begged. I am so so sad for Tanner. All he’s ever wanted is to be normal. He was so excited to start high school and learn to drive . He’s been looking tirelessly for a job. He even had an interview to volunteer at the zoo, but he missed it cause he’s in the hospital. He wants to grow up and have a family . Please please pray for him . Pray that they know what to do to get him better AND just as importantly keep him comfortable right now. I can’t bear it if he’s sad.

    2. So sorry. It's terribly unfair. I hope they can at least make him comfortable.

    3. So Tanner is about 15 now. Wow. It's a time when a young fellar begins to be independent, experience first loves, Try out his work ethic and look forward to his own particular future. This is just so very wrong. He's already had ENOUGH.

And Megan has had way more than enough! My heart aches for hers!!!!!! ✨πŸ’”✨

May the light of love engulf her, may healing yet be possible, and may health finally come their way!!!

  4. Thing about Meggie's situation is that she lost her middle son to suicide seven weeks ago, and is on a very real edge.

    1. Oh, Good Lord. I remember an old Greek woman who was on a ventilator in the ICU for a long time, got off it and out of the hospital. She came to the lab as an outpatient for a long time after that. Her family was there with her almost all the time she was in ICU, and I can't help but think that made a difference.

  5. Granddaughter called to FaceTime with me after Rosie arrived. She was delighted and also very relaxed and conversational. I felt like I was a friend at her slumber party. I love this person so much!!! πŸ’–
