    1. Duel use, solar energy and farming, sounds most promising.

As to the end of the GOP and blue tidal waves, I'm superstitious. Remember that HRC was unbeatable, all women would vote for her, and the like? I myself would prefer to think optimistically and prepare, but speak cautiously. Trumps base may be small, perhaps tiny, but they are blindly, irrationally loyal, while the defections, however heartening, remain scattered. Seems to me hoping for the best and preparing for the worst remains a sensible position. After all, the Democratic Party has an uncanny ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. So, to conclude my cliche fest, I'll believe a blue tidal wave when I see it.

    2. Yep. But Heaven knows we can use a bit of positive reinforcement. As we were extirpating weeds in the flowerbed that overlooks the river this early evening, I was thinking about the political situation in the UK, and particularly its repercussions for Ireland. I remain hopeful that the UK will honor its commitments under the Good Friday Accord, but I wouldn't bet on it as things stand now. Then I thought about a reunification referendum. One provision of the GFA is that the UK Secretary for Ireland can call a reunification referendum. Imagine that happens. Furthermore, imagine that reunification is approved. I should expect The Troubles to start all over again, but the whole mess would be in the Republic's lap, not the UK's.
