“I think it is the last gasp of a dying majority here. And every single one of those House members and state senators are going to be up for election next year along with me running for re-election for governor. And there will be a judgment day in North Carolina.” — North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D), quoted by the Raleigh News & Observer, on Republicans calling a surprise budget veto override vote with few Democrats present.

Medicaid’s Dark Secret: For many participants, the program that provides health care to millions of low-income Americans isn’t free. It’s a loan. And the government expects to be repaid. [Click] As I understand the article (after one gets past the horror stories), California has exceptional protections, but if one avoids probate by setting up a family trust (whether revocable or irrevocable—check me on that), things are OK. We recently went through estate planning and took care of the problem. Medicare covers 100% of nursing home costs for eight weeks, then a bit less for another eight weeks. Our attorney suggested that the thing to do if that were needed would be to find a satisfactory nursing home before changing over to MedicAid (MediCal in California), because the nursing homes can refuse to accept MedicAid patients, but cannot kick out people already accepted who change to MedicAid. Before that, one can spend down the unexcluded portions of the estate by improving or paying off the principal residence, and if desired buying a new car. Just a heads-up to anyone who might need the information…
We've been watching some of the debate (taping it all) while talking with our son, and having a delayed celebration of my birthday due to my cold. I didn't see anything surprising or useful in tonight's debate. More of what we already know. Did I miss something?
AND! I want to thank you, each and all, for the sweet birthday greetings on the Tuesday thread!! My Beatles birthday was sort of blah due to the cold, but there were some bright spots, and anyway, I get to be 64 for a whole year. :-)
I wanted to listen on the radio, but could find no way to do so. Amazingly, ABC's Chicago affiliate didn't carry the debate, and I couldn't find any way to access it online. So I ended up following the NY Times' "live update," which was not particularly satisfactory. Especially after the first hour they just seemed to do what they considered highlights. The only thing on the foreign policy question was Bernie pointing out that he never believed Bush and Cheney about Iraq while Biden had. And nothing at all on the climate change question. And what was that "charter school" question about? Not a total waste of time, but far too close to it.

ReplyDeleteThanks, Bill. I suppose it would be more important to the people who are just starting to pay attention (who are amazingly numerous, it seems).
