It's National Ice Cream Day!

  1. The photo shows the ice cream cakes made for baby granddaughter's first birthday party, which was yesterday.

I had plumb forgotten that the last day I'd posted a photo for was the Anniversary of the Moonwalk, yesterday. I might have realised it all much sooner, but life and death got in the way.

LIFE in the form of rather pregnant Daughter deciding yesterday, late morning, that she and Maine*Grandson would drive to Vermont for the birthday party despite the record breaking heat and humidity. Happily, they would be staying over night with us, so this meant some last minute child proofing ahead of their arrival. Plan A was for them to leave today around 12:30pm. Plan B was more like 3:45pm. So I was a bit occupied, having had about 4.5 hors sleep but, being a Mom as well as Grandmom, deciding to get up with Grandson and let Mom sleep in.

DEATH in the form of the shocking news mid-afternoon that our nephew (age 40) had a heart attack. While CPR was done, the result was minimal because it took too long. He is on a respirator and not expected to live.

    1. Make the *hours* of sleep. I was so tired that I was walking upstairs to take a much needed nap, when I discovered I'd goofed, but HAD to nap before I could even come make amends!

OMG. This 40 year old nephew is in the branch of our family that has had too much to bear! His younger sister got Leukemia as a teen, and he was her perfect match bone marrow donor! Their dad (Wil’s brother) died of pancreatic cancer, then the granddaughter was hit by a car at 16 and died, then the brother’s wife died of alcoholism last year. Also this chap's eldest sister got breast cancer and his younger sister (the one who got Leukemia as a teen) recently had ovarian cancer. His daughter was born very premature 6 years ago. Two months ago he moved with his wife and daughter to a new house in a new state.
This branch of the family has had too much. Please hold them in the Light. ✨

    3. Thank you, Bill. I couldn't even take in all the details of what happened because I was completely stunned.

  2. Good Heavens, listener; that is FAR more grief than one family should have to bear. Re CPR, I have attended scores of Code Blues in emergency rooms, and I don't recall one of them ever being ultimately successful. I guess it happens, but not often. I put it in my advance directive that it was not to be done if in the opinion of the attending physician it would likely be futile. Absent guidance, they are required to try.

    1. Yeah, Alan. Daughter said much the same thing. She used to teach CPR and served for a decade on a busy ambulance corps. She said that CPR will hold the person long enough to get a defibrillator on scene. But unless a defibrillator is used in the first 10 minutes, it's already too late for the brain (as in this case).

    2. It's still a rotten thing to happen. I remain aghast.

  4. Geez— sounds like people back east are suffering badly from the heat wave. [Click] It has lately been in the 90’s here, too— 90 degrees is kinda balmy, 100 is beginning to be frankly hot, 115 happens from time to time, but not every year. But that's with maybe 16% humidity during the afternoon, so the heat index equals the temperature.

    1. Last week was very hot, right up through the Disability Pride Parade. Although the temperatures for the parade were mid-90s rather than the predicyed upper 90s. Still had several groups wimp out not just for the parade but for sitting in the shade of a tent while presenting information to parade goers. Then a thunderstorm later in the afternoon sent the temperatures down into the 70s. Won't hit 80s again until Tuesday.

    2. Alan, the temps here have finally cooled to the 70's again. =Whew!= We had 94ºF on Saturday with humidity at 65%. It felt like 100 at one point. But humidity is the worst! We actually had a clear sky and bright moon Saturday night with 100% humidity!! The air was like soup. I was so deeply grateful to have heat pumps through it!! It stayed 72-74 and dry inside the house. Of course, we had to go to granddaughter's first birthday party on Saturday afternoon, outside and horribly hot. We had to keep going indoors to rest from the heat. We made sure to fill the bird feeder and put fresh cool water in the birdbath several times a day, and set fresh sugar water out for the hummingbirds.
