Before starting to read, an observation: It has long seemed to me that by and large Trump voters are or should be Bernie's natural constituency; though they should also be union members as well. How the owning class and megabusiness managed to persuade the working classes that unions are evil is something I simply cannot grok. Nor will I ever understand why anyone but other billionaires would ever vote for a billionaire for president. Bernie's platform benefits all Americans, especially the working and lower middle classes, just the demographics that seem most heavily to support Trump. And, of course, that is one very good reason why he should have been the nominee in '16 and why he should be the nominee in '20. But the clintonistas are still firmly in charge of the party apparatus, and I'm pretty sure they will move Heaven and Earth to make sure anyone, anyone at all is nominated instead of Bernie.
Alan, it bugs me too that his campaign keeps sending begging e-mails. Unlike you, though, I continue to give a mite whenever possible because he has to fight the Democratic party establishment long before he'll ever have to fight Trump.
Oh, I give regularly to Bernie's campaign, Cat. Warren too. And although I am somewhat apprehensive about Bernie trying to win over Republicans, I bear in mind that Fortune favors the brave. I am altogether too craven to stand for President.
I'm not sure to what extent I would call the Trump voters Bernie is addressing "Republicans." Many of them would have been "Reagan Democrats" three decades ago. Others were voting Democratic as recently as 2012, but didn't really think the Democratic establishment understood their needs. These are all people that Bernie's platform should resonate with. These aren't the entire Trump base, of course, but the far-right, racist fringe is in fact a small minority despite the prominence he has given them.

Liane Allen Word has it from folks in Paris, that most of the most important relics had been relocated prior to the start of renovations, and most of the rest were removed bucket-brigade style today, after the fire started, so all that was lost was the upper roof (the inner stone arch roof is still intact) and the spire, which was already being disassembled for repair. They'll need to replace the outer roof, and build a new spire, and replace one of the rose windows, but there was very little lost.
Thank goodness they didn't follow trump's advice and dump thousands of metric tons of water onto the building from helicopters, but instead took the time to carefully plan how to preserve the majority of the structure and surrounding buildings.
If they can keep the interior cool enough through the night, the building should survive. Like · React · More · 1 hour ago
Thanks, puddle. I saw that too. An encouraging word at the end of such a day is a great relief.
Wil and I watched a show tonight about Notre Dame Cathedral (from The Great Courses) and learned a lot about it that we hadn't known. Apparently it has gone through some significant changes over the years. So at least it's not ALL original that was lost. Still.
That's a good thread you linked to, listener; thank you. I was pleasantly surprised that I could largely understand Anne Hidalgo's tweets, given that I have never studied French. But I can comprehend the majority of a French newspaper, so shouldn't be surprised, I suppose.
PhD*Son bested himself in the Boston Marathon today, running 13min, 45sec faster than last year, and completing the 26.2mile course in 2 hours, 38min, and 8 seconds. He was about a half hour behind the elite male runner who came in first and about 15 minutes behind the elite female runner who came in first. Blew me away! But then, he has been training by running 70-90 miles per week since December.
