Susan, what colour are your eyes?

  1. Well, the little guy didn't win, in Vermont. 14 year old Ethan Sonneborn was bested by Christine Hallquist for the Democratic nomination as Governor of Vermont. [I voted for Ethan, because his views are spot on the same as my own!] As you may have heard, Christine is the first transgender candidate for Governor in the nation. Too bad she's in favour of F-35's being based in Burlington! The rest of us are pretty mad about it!! Bernie and Peter are okay with it too, and I really don't get that. Bernie at least lives as much on their flight path as I do. Of course, he's home a lot less than am I. And DT just approved the budget that includes them. SIGH.

  2. I read that the F-35 is considerably louder than the F-15, which is what we have based in Fresno. The F-15 is a good bit quieter than the Air Guard fighters that were previously based in Fresno. The main Fresno airport started as an Army Air Corp base, and because it remains a dual-purpose airport the US has continued to fund updates that could not be afforded otherwise. Fresno can accommodate B-52's, 747's and other very large aircraft. When the previous fighters were based in Fresno the government (in response to a lawsuit) funded noise insulation in houses near the flight path.

    1. We used to have F-15s but have had F-16s for decades.

The F-35s will be housed with the Green Mountain Boys at their hangar at the far side of Burlington International Airport. So they will take off and land near the biggest city in Vermont which sets between the Adirondack Mountains and the Green Mountains, effectively in a bowl. The noise is going to be horrendous! Furthermore, these are a new type of jet that isn’t much tried out yet. So, as I understand it, there are bound to be crashes.

  3. Thinking about Mr. Sonneborn, that must be quite something to put on his college application--former gubernatorial candidate!

  4. Well, I edged closer to getting into the beginning Art course; numbers one and two on the waitlist made it, and I am next. We had some work in class that few people finished, and there was a homework assignment; that should chase away at least one more person registered in the class. The pace of the class is about right for high school, but of course many of the students are just out of high school--and some may still be there. I expect the pace will be picking up.
