Hallo August

  1. Welcome back, listener. You and yours had quite a day. Those blood pressure medicines can be tricky, as can blood pressure excursions during pregnancy. I expect all will be back to normal before long, or as normal as can be with a new addition to the family!

Glad you liked the obstruction of justice column; I should never have expected the like in the New York Review of Books, but I am familiar only with the name of the publication. I want to see evidence that DT is up to his eyeballs in debt that can be traced back to people or institutions controlled by the Russian government. One or two other high crimes and misdemeanors would be frosting on the cake. Trump seems to be getting frantic these days. Well, it's past my bedtime.

    1. You need a photo ID to buy groceries, huh? Well, maybe in Trump's disordered dreams. He truly is mad; as if we needed further proof of that.

    2. I recall reading when HRC was running for President that she had not driven an automobile for more than 25 years. Trump probably hasn't gone grocery shopping for longer than that.

    1. I agree, Alan, that Josh Marshall is a good writer and an intelligent man with sound instincts. His intuition is probably right on.

A modern day Saturday night massacre? Candidly, I've been expecting one for months. As for Trump firing Muler himself, I shouldn't think it would be constitutional; though why that would bother Trump I don't know. But if it could have been done, surely Nixon would have fired Cox himself. The fact that he didn't shows that he couldn't, for one reason or another. Of course, Nixon was a lawyer. I imagine Trump knows and cares about as much about the law as about the Oort Cloud. Still, something has been holding him back up till now. We can only hope the whatever-it-is continues to hold.

    2. I see no reason why Trump couldn't "fire" Mueller himself. Except that it would have very little practical effect: Congress would simply create an Office of Special Counsel independent of the executive branch. I'm pretty sure I remember that the lawyer who investigated the Clintons and eventually recommended Bill's impeachment was an employee of Congress, not the Justice Department.

Mueller Wants to Ask Trump About Obstruction of Justice
August 1, 2018 at 4:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard

“Special counsel Robert Mueller’s office wants to ask President Trump about obstruction of justice,” sources close to the White House tell ABC News.

“The president learned within the last day that the special counsel will limit the scope of questioning and would like to ask questions both orally and written for the President to respond to.”

“According to sources familiar with the President’s reaction Wednesday morning, that was the genesis for his early morning tweet storm.”

  4. Trump's not alone in the belief that one needs a photo ID to do anything. Been hearing that argument from righties *for YEARS*. . . . It's an article of faith, lol!

    1. Wonder how many people who purchased condominia in Trump's towers were required to show photo ID...

    2. LOL Alan

But, Puddle, that doesn't make any sense. Daily experience at the grocery store, the gas station, the barber, etc. shows that you don't need ID of any kind. Surely, every RW not job is not insulated from the daily transactions of life. My dad has been doing the food shopping for years. He has never claimed to have been asked to show photo ID at checkout. Now, he may have to show some sort of identification to get his old folks' discount on Tuesdays, but if so I should imagine it's something issued by the supermarket itself. He has never said Sears asked to see identification before selling him snow tires or whatever. And he's as RW nut jobby as they come.

  5. Well, as I recall, one does need a driver's license often enough to cash checks were they don't know you, or to use a credit card. And no, these aren't nut jobs. Just plain republicans who *want* to have voter suppression without thinking about it.

  6. Hallo all. Thanks for these links and world news updates. I'd be as on a desert island this week without you.

Had another truly rough day. Grandad and Uncle took 10 year old Granddaughter to their sailing races tonight, but before the races even started they got T-boned by another boat. Truth is that my guys didn't have right of way AND that none of adults on either boat saw the other boat AND both groups have over 20 years of racing experience and the guy who T-boned them is an instructor! The only one of the 6 of them who saw the collision about to happen was Granddaughter. There was no time for anyone to react, except that, as the bow of the other boat was coming right at her, she wisely dove down into the boat. She was the only one injured, and that was only a floor burn. Could have been worse. But they lost a jib, ripped a mainsail, busted the stays and nearly lost the main! Chaos!

In the morning, I have to tell her that her young pet rat had a stroke and died tonight. This on top of her one year old pet rabbit dying on Tuesday (no one knows why). She has three more rats (two old and sickly), one more bunny, a cat, two kittens, and a pony, along with many other horses. Ah, but she loves each one so much. I think it's going to be a sad day. It's been a hard week, and no mistake, but I'm glad we could be together for those moments.

Who? Or was the damage shared?

Alan (who regrets the rat passing on so soon after the bunny)
