I notice that this editorial is 100% about California state government. And most of the improvements they cite have nothing to do with the jungle primary. But they say, "But even on this year’s fraught ticket, there’s former Republican Steve Poizner, running as an independent for Insurance Commissioner and favored to win. Under the old system, there would be no place on the ballot in this hyper-partisan year for a moderate like him." Really?? I know next to nothing about California Republicans, but Illinois Republicans aren't particularly known for their smarts, yet they still choose relative moderates more often than not. So much so that at one point, maybe a decade ago, a whole bunch of conservatives bolted and voted for the Green Party's candidate for governor. For four years the Greens were a third "established party" entitled to an automatic place on the ballot.
California Republicans have generally elected intransigent extremists for a long time, and it kept getting worse and worse. The simple majority for a budget was also a constitutional amendment, as I recall--another matter indeed. I linked to the editorial because I thought it gave a legitimate point of view, not necessarily because I agree with it.
My dearest friend of 40 years is here for three days!! And there is great rejoicing!!
I spent the last three days and more preparing the house and gardens and doing part of a house siding project! Apologies, as I lost track of where I'd stopped with the blog photos! If it's any comfort, my kitties felt deprived by my absence.
Thanks again, Cat, for posting !!! ♥ PERFECT that it was a kitty! Ha!
