  1. Facing Trump, a historian appeals to America's soul: 'I think we'll survive'[Click] In talking about the polarization of news media, he seems to overlook the extreme partisanship of US newspapers in the decades leading up to the Civil War (and probably after), which probably exceeds that of the present day by a good bit. 1. Monarchy is like a splendid ship, with all sails set; it moves majestically on, then it hits a rock and sinks forever. Democracy is like a raft. It never sinks, but, damn it, your feet are always in the water.

    2. Wanting to make sure I quoted it correctly, I looked it up, and in the process I read about Fisher Ames; here’s his Wikipedia biography.[Click] Quite a fellow—and from Massachusetts, as it happens.

  2. Cat--re your note on the previous thread. It is well to heed the old admonition that one should be very careful what one wishes for.

  3. Trump Grappling With Risks of North Korea Meeting [Click] New York Times: “Mr. Trump was both surprised and angered by a statement issued on Wednesday by the North’s chief nuclear negotiator, who declared that the country would never trade away its nuclear weapons capability in exchange for economic aid.”

Vladimir Putin (Sept. 3rd, 2017) "[The North Koreans] would rather eat grass than abandon their [nuclear weapons] programme unless they feel secure."

Could it be that DT was not paying attention to Uncle Vlad?

  5. Halllllllooooooo!!!!

I was in NH all weekend for an important (and overnight) family gathering. We got home Sunday night. Then on Monday I had a peer meeting ... in NH. Drove "there and back again" and convened the meeting too.

I am ready to sleep in tomorrow, then have a guidance meeting, then dash off to deliver my DIL's birthday present.

I just want the agony to be over, too...for the sake of all that is holy and good in the world.
