White House Broke Promise to Collins [Click] Could she have been so foolish as to expect otherwise? Or was she just pretending to help those of her constituents who can't write big checks? Sorry to be so cynical, but one wonders.
Susan Collins should have listened to Dubya: "Fool me once.....uh, can't get fooled again". This has happened with her repeatedly. I suspect she knows going in that no word will be kept, but it gives her cover to act as if she believed them. If she DID believe them she's too stupid to retain her seat.
Maine has a large Republican population that she serves. She walks a fine line to keep her seat, yet she stands up against the antics of their Republican Governor who is too right wing. She isn't stupid, and her role is difficult. But she's a normal Republican who does care. That's something. It would help her a lot if the people of Maine voted out the current Governor and came out stronger against the right.
listener--I took my mechanical pencil for test drive today. After reading the Wirecutter mechanical pencils review, [Click] I decided on a Pentel Graph Gear 1000, 0.3mm [Click] from dickblick.com. I also purchased their house brand art gum erasers. Tested with HB, H and 2H Pentel leads. The pen is on the heavy side for its size, because the body is steel rather than plastic. The lead hardness indicator might be handy for someone who uses a variety of leads, and the same goes for the color coding according to lead size. The retractable point is great, and the grip is excellent. For my intended use (drawing setup lines) the 0.3 mm 2H leads are dandy--plenty dark enough to see, light enough to be easily erased or obscured by overwriting with ink or watercolor. I think the pencil (as well as the gum erasers) are value for money.

P.S.: Your point re Sen. Collins is well taken; but she seems to be an anachronism in the GOP.
Go Alan go! You are so good at researching then deciding. I am sure you've found the best option for pencil and leads.
Let me know how the gum erasers work out for you. I know many artists swear by them, but I could never get them to work the way I wanted. Somehow they always smudge and the gumminess ends up on my page. I prefer a somewhat harder white eraser. My favourite is oval, which is a nice shape to work with.
“President Trump’s approval ratings have been nudging upward and his party’s political standing is improving, but the president’s unceasing habit of making inflammatory and insensitive remarks is galvanizing opposition against him — especially from women — that could smother Republican momentum going into the midterm campaign,” the New York Times reports.
A student called Kevin holds the fate of the Merkel coalition[Click] “Now, rather than the Schulz Effekt, it is the Kühnert Effekt that everyone talks about. He agrees that, for a party seeking to redefine itself, the rise of Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour has been an inspiration, even more so the performance of Bernie Sanders in the US presidential race. ‘They have served to prove that social democracy is not a lost cause,’ he said.”

She does indeed. We need more exceptions to the rule.

But the whole point of The Anonymous (in the Terra Ignota series) is that his/her identity is unknown except to his/her successor.
