    1. This accident and the resulting deaths would not have happened had Congress stuck to its original deadline for installing Positive Train Control. Now five deaths in the course of something like three months.

    2. But big companies are having such a hard time, with those taxes and all!

Second verse of Put in on the Ground:

For men who own the industries I'm shedding bitter tears
They haven't made a single dime in over thirty years
In over thirty years, my boys, in over thirty years
Not one thin dime in all that time, in over thirty years.

Ohhh, put it on the ground, spread it all around
Dig it with a hoe: it will make your flowers grow.

Here's one set of lyrics [Click] (I hadn't heard the verse about cost of living, but know a couple of other verses from the "Rebel Voices" CD and have made up one myself; and whaddayouknow--there is a Donald Trump version! [Click]
Here's [Click] a version sung a little oddly in my opinion, but clearly.

And if you would like something a little lighter there is the ever popular You ain't done nothing' if you ain't been called a red [Click]

  3. Harkining back a few threads: I've never understood why Ceres and Vesta don't get to be planets. It's discrimination, I tell you, discrimination!

    1. Awh, shit! Looks like that Pluto reclassification was a hoax, or somebody's idear of a joke. Not funny! Especially when it was obvious from the start that the so called vote was unethical, even if it might not technically have been against the Astronomical Union's rules and bylaws. Neil Degrasse Tyson has always been a vocal Pluto hater, and he made no secret of having waited till most of the members had left before staging that travesty of a vote.

I think the article or spoof or whatever it is Alan linked a few threads back is in poor taste, besides being disappointing.

    2. If so, abysmally poor taste. Maybe it is time to change the author's designation?

    3. Vesta doesn't qualify because it doesn't have a differentiated mantle and core. Ceres and Pluto do. But unlike the major planets, they haven't cleared all the other objects out of their orbits.

And yes, if that was a hoax it was in poor taste. By someone who I'm almost certain didn't understand the situation.

    4. Okay, at the risk of revealing my ignorance (which none of you guys so much as suspected, right?) I have to ask: If to be designated a planet an object must have cleared its orbit, why aren't Mercury and Venus the only "planets?" Everything else from Earth on out* has at least one moon, and/or trojans and/or rings. So, how can they be said to have cleared their orbits?

*Well, I don't recall Ceres having any satellites, so maybe that would be another indication of its planethood?

    5. Aha! I've nabbed it. This link [click] clarifies the matter. Still in rather poor taste to my way of thinking, but some people have questionable senses of humor.

    6. They can't read the calendar, and think April Fools Day is February first? If they're that far gone, how the devil would they know what a planet is or isn't? Obviously nothing they say is credible--including that Pluto is not a planet. Pluto forever!

      Alan

Hmmm.....maybe that was written by a Russian bot attempting to sow discord in the US? First Trump/Pence, now Pluto is or isn't or is a planet?

  4. Not a lot of news going on in the world today, it seems; maybe too many people watching the Super Bowl? I gather that it was a fairly high-scoring game, and that the audience had a good show.

My wife and daughter had both said they noticed that I had acquired a tremor in my hands--I had noticed it a bit, but didn't think it was noticeable. It is from overwork at the lab since the beginning of November, and will resolve after I quit. (Eight weeks to go, and one of those should be out of the lab on a private job). This afternoon we worked pulling weeds from a big flowerbed; a little over two hours plus maybe 20 minutes cleanup for me. Then at dinner, when I went to get seconds and was holding my plate a little above the counter with my left hand as I held the serving tongs in my right hand, the plate started tapping rapidly on the counter and the only way I could stop it was to set it down and let go. That was awfully obvious to everyone. A little while ago I slathered liniment on both hands and arms up above the elbows, and I will sleep with braces on my hands tonight. That will help. I also do helpful stretching exercises from time to time during the day, and last week I was working left-handed for two or three days. Phooey! I hadn't had such troubles for several years. But it is irritating rather than depressing because I know the cause and the cure.

P.S.: I notice an irritated place low on my right leg and thought of cellulitis, but it felt OK today. (I put some trisporin ointment on it anyway.)
