Merry Christmas!

  1. Merry Christmas, all. I just love those windows.

Hoping the kids can make it here tomorrow. We had snow, but there are icy patches. They are coming from northern KY, so I don't know how there roads are.

    1. I hope everyone is present and accounted for, Susan! What a difference it makes when loved ones can gather.

We're expecting 5-8" of snow with wind, so we'll see if that becomes an issue for Root*Center*Son. At least he has a Subaru with AWD and studded snow tires.

  3. Bright and white here. High around 20F, which isn't as cold as predicted.

  4. Just a merest of dustings, and cold, but does look festive. Quiet day. Kid and dad come next weekend.

And, one Mormon loon does NOT equal "Mormons"--the church seems duly appalled. . . . I 'spect when he kicks, the kids'll sell as fast as possible.

    1. Yes, yes, and that sounds reasonable.

A little foggy here this morning, then fog and clouds disappeared for most of the day; high overcast now. This turkey has hardly any fat, so I will use olive oil for the gravy.

  5. The turkey had almost no fat, so I couldn't baste it with the drippings; it didn't occur to me that I could have basted with something else, and the skin was rather tough. Also I had to use oil for gravy and the Yorkshire Pudding. Oil doesn't work like fat for making a roux, so I had to thicken the gravy with cornstarch, but it turned out OK. The Yorkshire Pudding browned very well without burning; it didn't rise as well as I had hoped, but as good as or better than most on Google Images. Naomi was the only one of us who had previously encountered Yorkshire Pudding (at a fancy restaurant in San Francisco, and maybe in London) and she said mine was good. She even had seconds, as did I. So, not bad for an experiment. I added pepper and thyme to the YP batter, and can testify it goes well with gravy.

  6. The kids arrived safely and we all ate until we were as stuffed as we could get. They left this afternoon and I sent hope lots of leftovers with them. Kept a few for us, but there are four of them and two of us. It was very nice and I left all the cleaning up for tomorrow. Resting and reading tonight.

Hope everybody had a good Christmas.

Alan - butter makes a good roux. Do you not keep butter?
