Plethora of Pinecones:

It's all about heat and drought:

  1. I just read through yesterday's thread. Susan, I am with you on being relieved that I know HOW to be poor.
We may yet need to pool tips and idears, as the world spins forward. I'm sure puddle would have some to share as well.

Alan, this is the brightest and best news I've heard in ages. Thanks for posting your two links to:
House GOP Fears Wave as Money Woes Grow / Democratic candidates doing well.
DNC Struggling to Raise Money / DNC not doing well.

    1. I'm not sure if it is great news or not, but it certainly is interesting. One might infer that the moneybags donors are not willing to bet on MORE OF THE SAME! being an effective rallying cry next year.

One of my tips (I think I may have found it in The Mother Earth News a long time ago):
Buy real soap (e.g. Ivory or Kirk's Coco Castile), not mixtures of detergent and lotion, like Dove. Buy months in advance, remove the wrapping and set it aside to dry out. Then a bar will last you a very long time. The commercial bar soap has a lot of water in it to make it lather a bit easier, but also to make people buy a lot more. And Consumer Reports has long said what I figured was the case: bottled shampoo works no better than simple soap, for a lot more money.

    2. I'm not sure I know how to be poor. I know how to be frugal, since for the bigger part of my life income has been either limited, erratic, or both. And Penny grew up in a family where income was likewise erratic. A sizable check, followed by nothing for an unpredictable time.

But these days our monthly income comes from Social Security plus annuities with a couple of major insurance companies. With a 403(b) and a sizable savings account as cash backup. Not particularly vulnerable to a depression. In fact, I just today got a notice that my Social Security is going up $11 a month due to last year's earnings.

    3. Alan, I agree about the use of soap as soap, but not as shampoo. My experience of using a bar of
soap as shampoo is that my hair comes out dry, coarse and more brittle. I would suggest getting shampoo on sale and using half the usual amount.

  2. Yesterday I was incognito. Well, actually, I was in CANADA! And for that reason I had my phone turned off.
It was a glorious day! We visited a friend and visited some old memories, and learned some new things about folks we knew years ago (all good). We had a delightful ramble and a great walk up an orchard slope to an amazing view! Photos will follow in coming days.

We had no trouble crossing into Canada, which has always been our experience. Coming back, it went fine, excepting that Mah*Sweetie drove right up to the patrol station. The young agent there greeted us with, "Thanks for blowing through all my Stop signs." Ha! Who knew? On the Canadian side there is just one place to stop. On the US side there are apparently three places one must stop (and this is a tiny crossing!). We just thought "Stop" meant "when you get there." I explained that we'd just renewed our passports and hadn't been to Canada in 15 years. At that he smiled and said, "Well, don't let me ruin your day, then." And off we went. :-D I love Vermont!

    1. I remember some folks traveling in an Airstream trailer they had dubbed Cognito. I don't find any reference online to a town or place named Cognito, more's the pity.

I've heard of the clergyman who named his horse Retreat, so that when the church secretary called he could honestly say he was "on Retreat."

  3. Before reading today's thread, let me just say I agree on hundred percent with Alan's remark at the end of Saturdays thread that the Cheeto-in-Chief doesn't know shit from shinola. I seriously doubt, though, that he even knows where Africa is, much less Niger.

  4. Did I mention that Shinola is now a brand of watch assembled in Detroit?

  6. The camel's back is broken. I don't see how anyone can still respect DT after this. He is incapable of being an American President. What is our recourse? And WHEN!!??! The age-old cry goes forth: "How long, O LORD?!!!"

    1. Susan, that piece you posted a few nights ago fits well with this account. Only...it's worse than we knew.

The reason our soldiers were so alone and unprotected is that on September 24th DT added the country of Chad to the list of countries whose citizens can't come into the USA. He did this because they weren't able to produce a tamper proof passport. They weren't able to produce it because they're so poor they ran out of passport paper.

But Chad's troops in Africa were the skilled troops who had previously protected ours. And when Chad was lumped by DT with their arch enemy Libya, they pulled out most of their troops.

    2. All this and Myeshia Johnson is expecting a baby in January.

And the reason Congresswoman Frederica Wilson heard Myeshia Johnson's call with the pResident is:
"Wilson was traveling with Myeisha Johnson in the same car when the president called. For Wilson, being there for Johnson's family was personal. She knew the fallen soldier and had known his family for years."
They were in a limo on their way to claim Sgt. Johnson's body. What a great time to tell a new widow (who is also 6 months pregnant) that her husband knew what he signed up for.

I don't even have a scent of empathy or respect left for that horrible man.

    5. I'd say you were not alone.

Our relief was palpable. Of course, then the Republicans refused to allow President Obama to appoint a replacement. So that relief was short lived. Even so.

  7. From the Peggy Noonan column Susan linked to a little while back:

The President’s primary problem as a leader isn’t that he is brash and stupid, “It is that he is weak and sniveling. It is that he undermines himself almost daily by ignoring traditional norms and forms of American masculinity.”

He's no man, much less a Mensch.
