  1. So late in the day and we don’t have any Howie Wowie yet?
I see that Jeb Bush [Click] is picking a fight with Pope Francis [Click] over stewardship of the Earth; somehow that doesn’t seem like a very clever move…

    1. No, id doesn't. Very Bush-like though. Maybe it will alienate the Catholic vote.

Speaking of alienating folks: Sis tells me The Donald cleverly used a Neil Young song for a campaign rally without asking Young first. This ticked Young off to such an extent that he promptly endorsed Bernie.

All we have to do is sit back and watch the arrogant idiots self-destruct.

  2. Thinking a bit more about masonry stoves: I think the problem I'm running into is that Twain implies they need very little wood. But the huge thermal inertia means you need to lot of heat to raise the temperature. I think the answer is that Twain is misleading us. The amounts he describes could be close to what, over the course of a day, you feed into a Franklin stove heating the whole house.

  3. Sounded to me like most of the heat is kept *inside* the stove, and heating the mass of the brick. Even the chimney is kept short and with just enough draft to keep the fire going. Metal stoves aren't often run at a high heat (in my case, once a day only to clear the creosote). That even the hot smoke is used to heat the fire brick/clay.

In China, there's virtually NO wood to burn. Most heating is done with either coal, or straw. (In fact, the whole cuisine was developed to cook food over short bursts of hot fire, lol!)

  4. I spent the day cleaning my house so well that two year old Grandson may now come and safely bomb it out. :-D He arrives with his Mom midday and our Youngest will follow later in the day with the truck filled with their belongings. They will spend tomorrow night with us, and the Closing on their house is Friday! Hurrah! They already had an 11th hour glitch, as the seller didn't get the electrical problem fixed correctly. So they are having an estimate done by a master electrician just before the Closing, and the seller will give them the money to have it fixed right. They were pretty tense for a bit today before they found a master electrician who can give an estimate in time. I will be taking care of Grandson on Friday during the Closing and the initial moving in. Wish us all luck!!!

    1. Buying a new house is always a great feeling. We've only done it once, and that 44 years ago come August, but I still remember.

    2. It sure can be stressful, though.
