I saw a garlic truck--empty--on the way to work today; first one this year, so the garlic harvest must be starting. I also saw two tractor-trailer loads of big yellow onions, so that harvest is underway, although there are none growing along my way. It seems early--just like the cherry harvest. Global warming? Feed corn for the dairies growing well, another cut of alfalfa under way, grain hay dried and baled. Producer tomatoes abundant, little cotton.
Oh--now that I have memorized "The Red Flag" sung to the tune of "The White Cockade," I think I will learn the latter. I find Robert Burns' lyrics, but those need a bit of translation into standard English before I can fully comprehend them.
Having read up on Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Jacobite uprising of 1745 and the Battle of Culloden, it seems Charles was an over-privileged fop, given military command with no significant military experience or judgment. It is not surprising that the result was disastrous. But the tune is still a good one. After all, I enjoy "The Bonnie Blue Flag" although I am not a Copperhead.
Enjoying my current (concurrent?) reads, The Lost Prince by Frances Hodgson Burnett and The Talisman by Sir Walter Scott. One is on the iPhone and the other on the iPad.
Did you know that the first Grand Marshall of the KKK, founded in 1865, was Confederate General Forrest? He became concerned about the violence of the Klan and tried unsuccessfully to disband it in 1869.
Mah*Sweetie wants to know why we don't just let the South go. Of course, he also thinks we should give Florida to Cuba and Texas to Mexico, saying it would solve everything from elections to disaster relief. I think he's only half serious. Maybe.

One of Dad's two cherry tomato plants is blooming already. Dad was surprised. Yes, maybe global warming. *shrug*

Yep, Scottish and English are different languages. Or at least Robbie and his contemporaries thought so.

Seems to me "The Skye Boat Song" deals with Bonny Prince Charlie. It's a beautiful melody and rather hypnotic.

DeleteMissed Juneteenth yesterday. More concerned about a dood named Roof. . . .
ReplyDeleteMust keep your priorities straight. How's old Roof doing?
DeleteCat, I'm thinking puddle is referring to Dylann Roof, the guy who killed nine people in SC. :-( At least they caught him.
DeleteJust heard that Roof has confessed to the killings.

ReplyDeleteDid I mention my new iPad? It's really neat!
I believe you mentioned it had come and there was some problem setting it up. Glad you're enjoying it now.

Giving Florida to Cuba would be ... interesting. For Cuba especially.
DeleteKinda glad they didn't. . . . Gave my part of the state time to get out of the confederacy, lol!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about that, BTW, before I moved here.
