Just as Marx pointed out--excessive concentration of capital chokes off the circulation of capital, which destroys capitalism. Just as Henry Ford was a marxist, Otto von Bismark was a socialist--he not only raised an army and navy by socialist means (universal taxation rather than feudal levies), he established universal health care and old age pensions (granted it was in the service of imperialism, but he was creating a country and struggling to see that it was not strangled in its cradle). Socialism is the foundation of the modern nation state.
Alan, I think the DNC is so scared of losing that they throw their weight behind the candidate they believe is most likely to win. The problem is they view it from inside the Beltway Bubble. John (neverstopstalking) Kerry, anyone? I don't think they have even a tiny clue as to how supremely fed up and disgusted the general populace who live in "the real world" is/are. We really don't have a Democracy with a big "D" anymore. I get discouraged because Democratic politicians are always trying to play "nice guy", never rebutting lies against them, while the Republicans play "Rabid Pit Bull". Just sick of it.
Howard and Bernie are first!
ReplyDeleteAlan, it would not surprise me in the least to find that the distribution of wealth is more unequal now than in 1934.
Interesting and most instructive:

Here's the Text of Bernie's Kickoff speech. Lots of good quotes in there. Which are your favourites?

Well, none of it changes for whom I would vote and for whom I would not.

It really doesn't seem suitable for a campaign theme song, but Bernie's campaign makes met think of Sister Rosetta Tharpe's
